Phil Miller blog: Kill wants to be impressed by grades; Dan Berezowitz gone

Interesting tweet from GL:

I don't think I got as many celebratory texts for Tubby's hiring as I have for Brez's firing. #Gophers

What's that about? I assume she's referring to Berezowitz.

Can someone please inform me why people are glad to see him go? I just don't understand the situation is all and I have no clue who the guy is. Sorry if this post irritates anyone.

Does every school employ a "recruiting coordinator?" If so, I don't understand the joy people have for seeing him go...I actually liked our recruiting philosophy over the last 4 years. If not, I can see how he was a little superfluous.

I only was around him for one game day in 2009, but my impression was that he is a major-league BS'er and rather insincere. I also got the impression that he is (was) pretty unliked by most of the staff.

As for his job description, he seemed to coordinate recruit visits. The game I worked, we went to the Radisson and picked up the recruits and parents and brought them to the Victory Walk, got them into the stadium Recruit Room and to the locker room, suites, etc.

I just think it comes down to Kill having a system he likes and he will execute it the way he sees fit.

I've met Brez many times and I like him. I'm sure Kill has his system and wants it his way but I'll miss Brez.

I too don't get this joy. Wouldn't he have been a big help in at least targeting guys like Gray, LaMicheal James, Huff, Cooper, etc? If no....picking who to target to recruit was a Brewster job...then no loss.

I thought it might be a loss...as those are the types of players that can help make you very good with the right coaching.

My biggest concern is how well will Kill recruit....as he needs to recruit at a Big Ten level...on par at a minimum with Iowa, Wisconsin, etc.

GM

My guess is he was too close to Brewster. He worked with him at North Carolina and Texas before joining him here. Maybe Kill has a system or maybe he didn't want a guy who was the previous coach's right hand man looking over his shoulder. I seem to recall a member of the staff threatening to call the police on Marcus Fuller of the PiPress when he was trying to get a comment from Brewster about being fired. Was it Berezowitz? Also, I am sure the minor recruiting violations he committed with Seantrel Henderson didn't endear him to Maturi. Oh well, good luck to him.

It all comes back to Kill having a system and it likely being much different from Brew's. From what GL is tweeting it also sounds like folks at the U thought he was overpaid for being a non-coach.

Nadine tweeted that she got more celebratory texts over the firing than she did for the hiring of Tubby. Doogie responded that "Kill clearly gets it".

I would imagine he was too entangled in the Brew hype-machine model of recruiting. It must have offended some people's sensibilities along the way.

The Doogie Seal of Approval? Uh oh...

What happened to Doogie? Did his employers tell him to stop blogging under his name?

For what it's worth I had the opportunity to meet Berezowitz on several occasions and from what I could gather he seems like a pretty good guy. It's easy to see why he was one of Brew's right-hand men. A talker like Brew, yes, and he certainly could sell you a house in the middle of the desert. I can see why Brew would trust him to deal with recruits.

Congratulations on the upcoming Little Doogie! Give our best to the misses and be sure to let us know when the happy event occurs.

You'll have plenty of time for posting when you're sitting up all night long with an infant that won't sleep unless she's being held. It's sleep you won't have time for.

There has to be more with the Brez talk than simply him recruiting like Brewster. I would think we would want to keep a similar style. Instate recruiting got significantly better and we established a decent walk on program (we should have 3 starters who were walk ons).

Brew's problem was never recruiting, it was simply the only thing he did well.

From hearing certain people's backlash, it sounds like it was much more of a personal problem. If any of you have hung out much at the Athletic Department at the U, you'd know that they break off into cliques like they're in junior high. Brez probably was a dingus because of the amount of people who typically don't talk a ton of smack making it obvious that he wasn't liked, so I can't blame Kill for wanting his own guy.

Recruiting Director

Please clarify, - does this mean Kill will or will not hire a Recruiting Director, or is it TBD? Could this title simply be given to someone already coaching on his staff, or is it most likely (at least at a BCS and BigTen level) to have this as a non-coaching position?

A lot of schools simply put the title on a position coach.

Wisconsin's last season was their DBs coach and Iowa's was their TE's coach.

Maybe it is a title we put on Hammock (with a bump in pay as well) to talk him into coming back?

Just as you posted this I saw this on Football Scoop. Hammock would be a great choice.

Miami: Sources tell us that Al Golden has hired Brennan Carroll as tight ends coach / recruiting coordinator (same role he had at USC under Pete).

Now we will not only have Doogie, we will soon have a little Doogie called a Dogie!!! Congrats and good luck Doogs!!!!!! Tell the little Mrs. that we love her too!!!!

the many, and I mean many people happy to see brez go has nothing to do with his recruiting performance as coordinator, but much more to do with his personal dealings with the people who cover Gopher recruiting. without going into many of the details, Nadine no doubt had the worst relationship with him which involved another major dispute several weeks ago. He was in charge of monitoring the internet and would make his/their displeasure known when something was written that they didn't agree with, doogie found this out first hand. some played ball with them and we're rewarded, others didn't and found it difficult to deal with the program.

Agree 100% with everything you just said and karma has a way of coming back to bite people, see ya Brez

That is interesting and it makes a ton of sense. He must've had pretty thin skinned to have a major dispute with Nadine. She is about as pro-gopher as a member of the media is going to get.
