Pharrel Payne '23-'24

MIP? Could be if he cuts down on fouls, develops his 8-12ft game and improves his FT%. The rest of his game is solid.

He is really good. Once he gets his free throws over 80 percent, then we can talk about Great.

Good point. Zero great players shot free throws poorly. Can’t think of one of the top of my head.

Edit: Michael Jordan. He was solid and under 80% in college. So maybe there is hope?

He’s gonna hurt some people in the 🎨.

Good golly - Bring The Payne

His FTs aren’t where he will increase his numbers to the next level.

He will get more production from getting some more plays designed for him and having better shooters on the perimeter to give him more space.

If the shooters come through he will probably go to the line more as people hustle to cover the help defense being spread.

But, he will get more improvement by being money inside 15 feet.

He’s got the potential.

He will have his game opened wide by Garcia and our incredible small forwards and 3 point shooting guards. He will be money with putbacks. He is almost impossible to defend in the paint. Wilson will provide the needed back up to him. No 6’7” center this year.

Play to your strengths. Every successful coach knows that. Build strengths then correct weaknesses. His strength is under the bucket. He will be on an All B1G team as a sophomore. Easy.

Agreed that he will benefit a huge amount from having better shooters on the perimeter and more room to work underneath. He'll shoot a ton of free throws next year no matter how the perimeter players shoot it, but another key is whether he's ready to show the other aspects of his offensive arsenal that are potentially going to put him at another level.

Payne has unusual quickness for a guy his size, and he also has the ability to put the ball on the floor and get by other bigs who are guarding him. He didn't show that much, if at all last year. They did quite a bit of running the offense through him at the free throw line or near the top of the key last year because he passes it pretty well. He rarely made offensive moves from there.

If his free throw jumper is functional this year (doesn't have to be great, just functional), and he can either shoot it from there or put it on the floor, he'll be a monster, because he has the quickness to get by people. We already know his inside moves, footwork, and great hands will continue to develop and serve him well near the basket.

Add the short jumper, maybe a jump hook (I've seen him shoot a few before), and the ability to put it on the floor and drive, and you may have the makings of one of the best bigs to play for the Gophers in a long while. Hyperbole? Maybe, but it wouldn't surprise me at all.

He is not only quick but he has a real motor. There are very few men his size that are real active players.

I'm excited about his next jump.
