10. TANNER MORGAN, MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS
Year: Sophomore
While Morgan has one of the nation's best receiving corps, he has done his fair share of the heavy lifting for the Gophers' offense. The redshirt sophomore was the third-highest-graded quarterback in the country from Week 5 on. Scouts are going to love his quick release. This is a prospect to keep an eye on.

High praise indeed.

Thanks PF. That is awesome to hear. Hopefully depth is improving also and the Gophs will have a great offense for years to come. Just need to improve the spiral spin rate.....

He's super productive, efficient, a leader, and had basically the same SPARQ score as Kamal Martin. What's not to like about him as a pro?

Not sure why but I watched a good chunk of the Eagles Cowboys game today and the number of poor passes and dropped balls on both sides made me miss watching the Gophers passing game. I'm very glad Tanner Morgan is a Gopher.

Yeah, I turned it to figure skating. Seahawks vs Cards would have been a better game for FOX here.

I don't see him as a NFL qb but he is a hell of a college qb

PFF seems better at recognizing college productivity than predicting draft status but despite the size issue and perceptions of arm strength I’ve seen QBs with similar arms play NFL games. With his timing and accuracy Morgan is able to throw a lot of balls with touch but every now and again he’ll gun one down the middle of the field. Being a game of milliseconds and inches scouts will be watching to see how quickly he can deliver the ball to different parts of the field but accuracy isn’t ever an issue...major plus

It seems like he’s been gaining arm strength, as he continues to work with that mechanics guru. He does have a quick release. I’d like them to design game plans around getting the ball out of his hand quicker. That’s why Brees is still producing at such a high level at age 40. In college, and early in his NFL career, Brees had the ability to scramble and run for positive yardage. Not so much anymore.

This is from Drew Brees' Wikipedia page:

"Brees' college success led to projections that he would be a mid–late first-round draft pick in the 2001 NFL Draft,[59] but he slipped due to concerns about his relatively short stature for a professional quarterback (6'), a perceived lack of arm strength, and a sense that he had succeeded in college in a spread offense."

Hmmm... Too short. Lacks ideal, NFL-quality arm strength. Sounds quite familiar.

Drew Brees, despite being 'too short' and 'weak-armed' has accumulated 77,000+ NFL passing yards. 6,800+ NFL completions. 544 (and counting) NFL touchdown passes. Those are all NFL records.

Maybe we need to re-think our criteria, just a bit.

They forgot to mention he can indeed throw it farther than 40 yards.

Also he was suppose to be our back up, so is Annexstad really that much better? Or does Fleck's decision making come into question?

I‘ve been told by someone with way more knowledge of the situation than Burns that this wasn’t necessarily the case. I can’t say any more about it than that.

I honestly can't remember but I thought it was announced that Annexstad was the starter before his injury. And Annexstad clearly got the start the year before. So again, is Fleck bad at judging this? Because Morgan is on pace to be the greatest gopher QB ever (OK I made that up because I'm too lazy to look at actual statistics but it could be true) so it's interesting Fleck had him on the bench.

The starter hadn’t been announced before the injury.

I think he’ll definitely get drafted if he has good season next year.

2 years. only a sophomore and would guess he will not be in the top flight of guys (Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Tua Tagavailoa if he comes back draft). Will be a mid-late rounder and so I'd guess he's coming back after next year regardless

yeah, Morgan is the type of QB that would have been at W Mich that comes to TCF and smokes us. Leaving every single Gopher fan wondering 'how in the hel*?'

I'm pretty sure from what I've seen that Morgan is on pace to arguably be the best Gopher QB ever. Not sure if he'll catch a couple guys in yards passing, but in terms of efficiency (completion %, yards per attempt, TD/INT ratio, etc.) for sure.

We can all be very glad they decided to redshirt him his freshman season or next year would be his senior year. All they had that year were Demry Croft and Conner Rohde too -- maybe the worst we have ever been at QB. Amazing they didn't let him start as a freshman.

Yup, that's the key. Fleck has repeatedly said he won't sacrifice the future for today unless it's absolutely necessary. That 2017 team was going nowhere and he knew it. They could've maybe eeked out that 6th win, but as you said, it would've meant one less year of Morgan when the team was REALLY getting good.

We can only hope this year's RS (esp on D) will be equally impactful in the next couple and we'll be thankful they RS this year despite our near worst in conference TFL/sack numbers.
