Paul Carter compared to Dennis Rodman

This is a huge stretch I know and besides Carter has black hair.

But, I used to enjoy watching Rodman (esp later years) on the court when he would score about 3 or 4 points and get 20+ rebounds. I am not aware of any other comparable player. It also seems I have never seen another player emulate Rodman's playing style either. Every move Rodman would make on the court seemed like it was dedicated to the get next rebound. From the moment the ball was inbounded (offense or defense) it seemed like Rodman was positioning himself from the get-go to get the next rebound. 'Who had the ball, which side of the court was the ball on, where would the next shot likely come from, where would the carom from that shot take the ball, all seemed like questions Rodman would continually go over in his mind in preparation for the next rebound. When he would get the ball in his hands it was like he was uncomfortable having it in his hands because it would detract from his concentration on getting in position for the next rebound wherever it would be so he would immediately get rid of the ball even if it may have looked like he may have had an opening to shoot.

The talk now is that Rodney Williams will start in place of Paul Carter and for now I like that move. Carter is more of a natural 3 than a 4. Interestingly (at least to me) Rodman started his career as a 3 and eventually became a 4. Carter has some real skills in rebounding the basketball. I would like to see him find some old film of Dennis rebounding the basketball and see if he can follow in Rodman's path - on the court only. Maybe, he could be a great 6th man dedicated to rebounding the basketball and like Rodman eventually work his way back into the starting lineup.

Just a thought.

I've noticed this similarity and told it to people ever since I watched Carter play Juco. I love PC, but I agree he is better as a sixth man/defensive/rebounding specialist

We need Paul Carter to play the 4 well. In the Big Ten and against better competition we will need him to get 6+ rebounds a game. Rodney looks very good, but he doesn't have the strength yet to be a 6+ rebounder per game.

I understand your comparison is about rebounding ability. But when I read the title of your post I remembered back to a conversation I had with a not to be named (and not all that memorable) former NBA player who said, half-jokingly, that Rodman wasn't as good a rebounder as he seemed to be because he got a lot of rebounds as a result of being so scuzzy that nobody wanted to get close to him to contest them. OTOH, I've never met Carter, but from what I've read, he seems like a good guy.

It seems Dennis would stop at nothing to gain another rebounding advantage. ;)

Agree, although I think you could have ended your statement after "nothing" and been equally accurate. :)

There is something that PC can learn from RSIII. Last night when RSIII was left deserted at the arc, with the fans yelling SHOOT, ... he just said NO. Later on when Carter was left open outside he couldn't resist. Please Paul, just say no ... you have no business launching from that far out.

P.S. I have my doubts about DJ and Al Jr. launching from out there too.

Carter was 1 for 2....I agree that he's not the first guy I want taking that shot, but I don't think he's our worst shooter either.

There is someone worse? on the Gopher team or everybody attending the U of M? Please say you're kidding.

PS - Carter's a strong rebounder and I DO want him to play, just don't shoot beyond 4 feet.

I remember going to the Target Center and watching a young Rodman (with black hair) playing for the Pistons. He seemed like such a special athlete. I believe he had what they call "a live body", like a wound up spring ready to explode in motion.

I Watched Rodman Play Here For The Bulls

2 things I notice - #1 he's a quick leaper and #2 he often seemed to be in the perfect spot for a rebound.

He worked hard at being a great rebounder and results showed it.
