Oh well! Excited about next year and playing in a tournament that the rest of the nation actually watches.

We'll be alright next year. This was really invaluable experience. The only thing I can think of positive? Well maybe the team will hate feeling like this tonight and come back working harder over the summer to have a more successful season next time.

This is a potential sweet sixteen team with Trevor, without him they are probably one of the last four in. Him coming back is key considering our lack of experience in the front court.

Maybe Rodney won't like ending the season like that and come back?

Feeling like what tonight? Getting blown out in a meaningless game should not be why they work hard over the summer. Their motoivation to work hard over the summer should be that they don't want to play in the NIT again next year.

If the players felt the game is meaningless, we need to think if they are the players we want on this team.

Meaningless?

Yes meaningless. What was more important overalll that they team was able to get 5 more games, 5 more games away from home with 3 of them being actual road games or winning the NIT?
Both are equally important to me.

If you honestly think the players thought that game was meaningless and winning the NIT is meaningless, maybe you don't understand how players think.

Yes, Rodney was tearing up over a meaningless game.

You are right. That should be the team goal for next year. Getting back to the NIT Championship game and winning!

You clearly don't understand how this works. Sure, they couldn't acheive their goal of the NCAA tourney, but they still had games they could win and for a player that should never be meaningless.
Let's say your goal is to make a million dollars a year, but something happens where that becomes impossible. Do you just give up?

Did I say they should have given up? Did I say they shouldn't try to win the game? I am sure they wished they had played better. The fact is winning or losing the NIT champiosnhip game overall doesn't matter. What exactly do you get for winning? More important was the fact that they had more practice time and games played against ok competition which should help with the progress of the team into next season.

Jim B loves to call charges!!!! Time to retire - his no call on Rodney when another ref had to call it from afar was a classic!

I'd hoped that this thread would be filled with positive comments. Here's mine. THANKS GOPHERS for all you hard work and dedication. I am already looking forward to next year! Stanford's game was "on" and I felt sad for your pain. Finally, too many miles and injuries caught up with you. I hope you had fun in New York. Wish you the best!

why was last nights game "meaningless?" how can a "fan" determine that? im so sick of people trashing the NIT as if we were playing in a womans tourney. we are better than about 20 teams that made the ncaa tourney, same goes for stanford, washington, northwestern, etc. if the ncaa actually gave a damn about the top 68 teams being involved there would no longer be a norfolk state, south dakota state, lehigh, and so on. anyone that thinks otherwise doesnt follow college basketball closely. this was a great experience especially for how the season went and it was valuable for the program. some of you kfan listeners need to come up with your own opinions rather than repeating burrito and mr nfl pa.

Interesting comment. All of those teams that won their respective conference tournaments deserve to be in the NCAA tournament. Are the Gophers a better team? Probably. However we went 6-12 in the big ten and really didn't reserve ourselves a spot. Bashing on Norfolk State and Lehigh? They each put down a two seeded team.

We didn't make the NCAA tournament, which is obviously where we wanted to be. However, once we were in the NIT, winning the NIT was all we had and those games mattered. It is sort of like that scene in The Lion in Winter when two men about to be killed were talking, Prince Richard told Prince Geoffrey to basically stand up and take it like a man, Geoffrey called Richard a fool and asked if how they fell down mattered and Richard responded "when the fall is all there is, it matters". The NIT was all there was, and I wanted the boys to win it.

Referencing 15 seeds that beat 2 seeds as not deserving of being in the NCAA tourney is a great take.

I think some really good things came out of the NIT run-- Dre taking charge of games and of the team, Rodney stepping up big, Andre Ingram justifying his year, Tubby learning to limit the minutes of some of the guys that might have contributed to the 6-12 B1G record plus some other things I am forgetting right now. And with a full roster coming back next year things are looking up for the first off-season in a while.

The one thing I haven't seen anywhere here is that our roster coming back next year looks pretty good, but how about Stanfords? They have 10 guys coming back from that team with 2 four star recruits and a 3 star guy too. Johnny Dawkins has it going in his 4th year there.

Thanks, Gophers, for missing as much class time as you did to play in this tournament, and for deciding that you were going to work hard and play hard and elevate your games in the process - in a tourney that some think is completely meaningless. Regardless of the last game, it added some sweetness to the season.

In addition to individuals improving their individual games, the coaches and players need to reflect on consistency. Yes, the whole league was up and down this year, but the Gophs were as inconsistent as anyone, and that continued through to the end - playing some of their best ball of the year in the NIT only to play one of their worst games in the final. I was listening to Trent Tucker on KFAN on the way home yesterday, and he thought the key to the Gophers' postseason successes was toughness. Very true. At the same time, their flop in the final game was due to a sudden lack of toughness - the mental toughness to play through adversity. The players definitely got frustrated and discouraged out there. That mental hump is the key thing for the team as a whole to try and overcome next year.

Totally agree!!

Right on. Also listened to Trucker although it was damn near unbearable with Insufferable Packer guy repeating himself over and over. "Frustrated and discouraged" is an excellent description of them the last 3/4 of that game.

It's gonna be pretty tough to beat this for the Most Outstanding Unintentionally Funny GopherHole Comment Award of 2012. Really nice work.

Yeah, when Trent said the Gophers were showing toughness, Insufferable Packer Guy snorted. Up until last night, though, the Gophs were starting to show some mental toughness, especially in the OT win against Washington. Gotta take baby steps sometimes, even if you take a step backward once in a while.
