Ahead of Minnesota’s meeting against Ohio State Saturday, Golden Gophers coach P.J. Fleck remembered watching Brian Hartline’s development up close.

Fleck started his coaching career as an Ohio State graduate assistant in 2006 after playing wide receiver at Northern Illinois and with the San Francisco 49ers. And as he prepares Minnesota to face the Buckeyes, Fleck said he can see why Hartline’s wide receivers are as productive as they are.

“You can see why that room continues to develop the way they do because he was always that type of player,” Fleck said of Hartline Monday. “He was next to Teddy Ginn and Roy Hall, all these guys. He was the guy that kind of worked through the middle and did a lot of things and had to understand a lot of defenses. He was fast, don’t get me wrong. Hartline can run. He played in the NFL for a long time. But he was such a student of the game, and it was so fun to coach him and be around him. So you can see the influence he’s had on those receivers.”
