Per Randy:

The passing woes continued in 2023, when Minnesota mustered only 143.4 passing yards per game, 126th in the nation.

That all changed last year when coach P.J. Fleck and offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh Jr. landed Max Brosmer in the transfer portal. Brosmer completed 66.5% of his passes for 2,828 yards and 18 TDs, helping the Gophers go 8-5, a two-game improvement from their 2023 record.

With redshirt freshman Drake Lindsey taking the offensive reins from Brosmer, Fleck and Harbaugh plan to keep the passing game front and center while still rushing effectively.

“As we keep growing together, this has a chance to be a really special passing game, and it doesn’t come around very often when you have a chance to be really, really special in the pass game,” Fleck said Monday ahead of Saturday’s 11 a.m. home game against FCS team Northwestern State. “And we cannot take that for granted.”

Go Gophers!!

To take the passing game to levels unseen in recent Gophers history, we need better receivers. I love Drake’s arm and think he’s going to be a force as he settles into the position, so bringing in legit playmakers has to be a huge priority for the coaching staff to allow him to reach that potential.

I truly think if Drake shows up every week as the guy we saw last week and the passing game remains as open as it was, we'll be able to draw some upper tier transfers at receiver. I also think our receivers will continue to get better. We have some speed, as the guys get some more game experience and we keep the passing game open, we can start cooking

Here's a video of passing game highlights vs Buffalo. I don't know, maybe I'm biased but I like our receivers.

I believe the Universal Catch Equation is: C = [(QBCD/QBDC) + (RE/RH)]/DQ X CLRFC where:

QBCD = QB Check-Down
QBDC = QB Decent Throw
RE = Receiver's Eyes
RH = Receiver's Hands
DQ = Defender Quality
CLRFC = Coach's Lucky Rabbit Foot Constant

...or similar...

I've seen this on many a locker room chalkboards at half-time...

I'm a little worried you are hanging out in locker rooms during half-times...

A Johnson or Bateman type receiver would make a big difference.

We may have one in Jalen Smith....when other players talk about him they light up....clearly they are seeing something special there. Who knows if he gets to the level of those other two but there is a chance he ends up being something really big for us in the passing game....

And yet sadly I guarantee there are still some fans on this forum that think we are going to run a service academy offense......:)

We haven't morphed into a pass first team but the passing game is becoming a key part of setting up the running game and as Drake and the other guys get more experience there is a chance our passing game could become something really fun to watch.

Feels weird typing that and thinking back to those years where it felt like the forward pass was a concept we just couldn't figure out.

I rewatched the first half and I too came away impressed by the receivers! First game new QB new WRs that was the best passing I have seen in a first game of the season ever! I am getting over excited! Here we go.....
