So.... How close is he to his peers wage wise? How big is the salary difference between him and the #8 or #9 guy?
 



Is Fleck Nick Saban? No. But it's the best stretch of Gopher football since the 60's. He's our guy and he seems to love it here. We're very competitive, have quality kids, not a lot of turnover, and have, what i think, is a growing perception of a "life" program. I honestly don't think we can hire better unless PJ brings us to the next level and then leaves.
I'm starting to think he's our Alvarez or Ferentz. Just need to get 1 or 2 more wins a year. I think we're trending up with some of the recruits we're getting.

Fleck has said he wanted to do what guys like Alvarez/Fry/Ferentz have done at their schools. Cynical fans just dismissed it and assumed he would be out the door at the first chance he got.

The perception: Fleck finds guys that are under the radar and hires them, and they excel here, and then they get hired away for more money. That is certainly true in some cases.

Yet Harbaugh, Collins, Simon, Callahan have each been with Fleck for a long time. Sori-Marin is a former player under Fleck.

There's no denying there has been turnover, but quite a few of the key guys on Fleck's staff have been pretty constant. That said, when you have an eye for talent (as Fleck does) you will have assistants who are given amazing opportunities elsewhere. It's the nature of the beast. For example, DeLattiboudere was/is a Fleck protege and former player who was quickly rewarded for his excellence while coaching here with an outstanding opportunity in the NFL.

Nick saban finished top 4 of the big ten once and never won it while coaching a program that has had much more success than the gophers

In the end the Star Tribune picked the headline that would be the most disparaging toward the University and against the football program in general. It actually hinders revenue growth for the University by getting people upset at football spending because to many people think if we spend money there we are taking money from academics - vs realizing that we get way more back from the dollars we spend there vs. what we put into it.

Fleck is helping the U of M out a ton and the academics of the U are better with him being on campus.

Like most newspapers, they are trying to be relevant. The fastest way is to be negative and use half-truths. It’s about trying to win a prize and the adoration of your peers. The reader is irrelevant.

Nothing new in this statement. However, it is the non-revenue sports (swimming, wrestling, track, etc.) that supply our Olympic teams. Without this feed from the collegiate sports, many Olympic sports would falter.

For sure. I'm no fan of the changes happening in college sports.

The man is underpaid!!
We need somebody to win the lottery, become a Gopher booster and get Fleck's salary and the assistants in the top 5. That would be helpful to the program and deserving.
Then we need some more NIL money....then we could expect to compete for playoff seeds.
 

Well, here were the numbers as of February, and there must have been multiple coaching contract updates to move PJ's rank to 11th based on where things stood in February. Back in Feb, there wasn't a massive disparity between 5th and 11th at this kind of money and if you want to talk getting to the 4th spot with Dan Lanning, then win the Big1G. PJ's base salary is $6M and with the retention bonus, he's sitting at $7M if he's still here on Dec. 31st. So, he's not exactly getting screwed.

As mentioned, this SI article is from February this year and I wish they did a complete follow-up as there must have been quite a few contract updates since then to place PJ at 11th:

Those three won conference championships. Maybe Fleck gets there with the playing field now slightly leveled. But Fleck did have interest at UCLA but UCLA's poverty dimmed his interest. I do think the longer he's here the less likely he leaves absent a few sub .500 seasons.
