Our OC sucks

The closing out games is a PJ thing not an OC thing. PJ wants to bleed clock at all expense. It is so utterly predictable. Two runs, then a poorly executed 3rd down pass. It’s infuriating, as if they just keep like they’ve been playing, they may have strung together a couple first downs and actually bleed clock. But instead, we are content with 3 and outs anytime we’re up by more than 1 score.

Kirk not doing well at Penn State. Don't know how he is doing today though.

Really sucks

I don't love a lot of the things that he does. I especially hate his play calling in gotta-have-it situations (i.e., trotting out the wildcat whenever we need to pick up 3 yards), but I'll give him some credit today. They did really good work rolling Tanner outside the pocket and changing the release point on throws. Helped the offensive line a ton and had to be super frustrating for the secondary.

It's the same thing they did with Cousins on the Vikings and shows that they are learning so my 'fire the oc' meter actually went down a little bit in this game (still don't love him though).

Also have to admit that the offense is playing well this year and has not been the thing keeping MN from winning games. Definitely the opposite.

Gophers played without their best reciever. Down several offensive lineman (Had a true freshman in). Only 1 TE available. Mo was out for a long stretch of time. 2 weeks of no practicing. Yet somehow they managed to control the clock and be effictive on offense. Tell me again why the OC is bad?

It's way too early to judge, especially given all that's gone on this year, but I'll never understand not giving Simon the job outright.
As best I can tell everything is being re-assessed continuously be the HC.

Certainly with this being Year 0 for the OC...plus everything else that IS 2020...this year's assessment is incomplete at best.

If we get somewhat more normal...whatever that looks like in the covid alternative timeline...then I'll be more concerned if it looks the same. Just too soon to know. Not enough data.

I've seen a lot of the complaining being that we check to the sideline constantly on offense, we've been doing this for years. It's a PJ thing.

Utah State ran a hurry up (a real hurry up offense). They almost always snapped the ball with about 25 seconds left on the play clock. Western Kentucky in 2017/2018 also ran a hurry up offense (not as fast as Utah State and they would occasionally go right away and occasionally go with about 20 seconds left on the clock).

Question - is it on the OC, the QB or the HC for the way the team uses the play clock. constantly running the play clock down to :01 or :00 - calling time outs when they run out of time to run a play - or looking disjointed when they rush the count to beat the snap.

And how many times do the backs need to step away from the line and look at the bench? What are they looking at?

Drives me freakin' nuts.

It was the same way under KC too. See BL post. This isn't new. Didn't see much bitching on the way to 11 wins last year. Get used to it

Oh there was PLENTY of bitching during the Non-Conference Schedule and they won all three of those games. 😉

I'd like to see a little more unpredictability/creativity in the play calling, but I'd tap tap the breaks a little. With a make shift offensive line, missing star WR and banged up RB they just ran and passed for 200 yards each. Of all the years to be a first year OC. I can't even imagine the challenges. I look forward (hopefully) to a regular off-season/season and consistent lineups to see what he can do next year.

If Mo didn’t slide at the end, we would have scored 31 points in a B1G game. And without Bateman, 2 o-linemen and 3 TEs. And I think we had almost 400 total yards and no turnovers. What’s the problem? Do you want Nebraska’s OC?

They want to score 15 points a game trying to score 35.

Agreed. The thread was posted 1:38pm. At the end of 3 quarters. When both teams were shutout. Not sure why is was posted but it hasn't aged well.

And I should add, the I heart TEs crowd should be reveling tonight after BSF’s TD.

It almost feels to me like the only reason we threw to the tight end on that play was PJ flicking off Frost by running the same play they scored on us with. I hope I am wrong as there should be huge opportunities for te seams, outs, curls, posts, flags and crosses with such a potent running game to play off

I just looked at Pat Friermuth’s stats for the year: 23 catches for 310 yards and 1 TD through 8 games. Last year he was at 43/507/7. So he’s getting fewer targets than last year with Ciarocca, but still significantly more than our TEs got under Kirk.

I’m still waiting to see if SomeDay is going to return to this thread. Not as a gotcha moment, I’m just generally interested at what point in the game yesterday could someone have been so dismayed by our offensive play calling.
