Today's impact openers:

Ohio State v USC in Las Vegas

Purdue @ UCLA

Southern Cal out scored Ohio State 31-10 in the second quarter and the Buckeyes outscored SC 30-11 in the third quarter. But Southern Cal and its zone prevailed 83-74 over the Buckeye press. Juju Watkins scored 32 in her debut for the future B1G Ten member. Sheldon posted 28 for OSU. Cotie McMahon had a dissappointing afternoon with 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 fouls.

USC is going to be a crazy good team. The talent in the Big Ten is going to be crazy. Some big waves are coming from the Southern Cal teams.

I wonder what Big Ten women's basketball looks like in five years. There are rumors of ACC schools bolting for the Big Ten soon, North Carolina mentioned often.

In the second game of the Hall of Fame doubleheader in Vegas, Colorado took down LSU 92-78. The Buffalos controlled every aspect of play. For Colorado, Formann, the primary assassin from three, had 27 points, Vonleh 24 and Sherrod 19. Sherrod was outstanding.

So that might mean that UConn is #1 when they come to town 😳

Iowa 4.5 point favorites.

I would take VT on that.

It looks like former Gopher Rose Micheaux was listed as the starter. Did she come out? I'm watching and haven't seen her.

Rose Micheaux's stats so far this season at Virginia Tech. VT has played one game so far this year and in progress now against Iowa:

Tonight on ESPN2 at 7:00 PM, Iowa versus Virginia Tech and Caitlin Clark versus Rose Micheaux
Clark with 44 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists
Micheaux with 0 points, 1 rebound. set screens for half of the 1Q, travelled and was done. Looked lost in the VT offensive and defensive sets.

In her time at Minnesota my biggest complaint about her was not understanding the game. Mostly when to shoot and when to pass. So it doesn’t honestly surprise me that much that she struggled with the offense.

This was mentioned during the game:

Public records obtained by Channel 9 show the Charlotte Sports Foundation is financially treating these two teams like the powerhouses they are. The Ally Tipoff Game Agreement shows Iowa and Virginia Tech will each get payouts of $150,000. Iowa is also getting an extra $50,000 for travel and hotel expenses.

Maryland Sunday begins a BOOM BOOM road trip against power South Carolina and power UConn. Bold.

And then UConn comes to embarrass Minneaota if Gophers carelessly fling the ball around like they did against LIU after starting the game strong.

ABC and ESPN3 at noon -- #14 Maryland vs #6 South Carolina.

Both teams lost their top star player in the offseason -- Aliyah Boston and Diamond Miller -- and reload. Not sure what to expect from either or the direction they are headed, up or down a few spots in stature.

Maryland coach Brenda Frese (Oldfield) of course is the former Gophers coach who took Minnesota to the NCAA tournament her first and only year in Minnesota, with the help of Lindsay Whalen in her breakout season.

Frese in this game is making a statement that Maryland plays with the top elite even if not quite to that top-4 level. Maryland year after year consistently is one of the top teams.

ESPN at 4 PM -- #9 Indiana vs #15 Stanford.

Boom! Another big game out of the gate.

Great exposure for women's college basketball! The UConn-NC State game will be on ABC too, a full day of good action widely broadcast to viewers.

At half-time. The game was even and then, boom, South Carolina jumps up with a 9-0 run. That's South Carolina. And once they jump up they'll hold the lead to the end.

Barely worth mentioning, Ohio State obliterated IUPUI (net rank 178) by 50 points. tOSU forced 28 turnovers. tOSU had 11 steals.

Previously, Ohio State played South Carolina and kept it closer than Maryland today playing SC.

Iowa is at UNI at 2:00 on ESPN3. UNI is picked to win the Minnesota Valley Conference so this is not a cupcake roadie for Iowa. Drake is picked as #2 in the Valley so the mid-majors in Iowa are a pretty tough out especially on their home courts.

Maryland trying to hang with the best backfired. South Carolina throttled Maryland. Now SC is back near-or-at the top again.

Seven South Carolina players with double-digit scoring. Talk about balance and depth.

Freshman Chloe Kitts with a double-double. Ashlyn Watkins with a double-double off the bench.

Bueckers is back. In Q1, 6 points and a steal.

Looks like #10 Nika Muhl brings the ball up court for UConn, meaning Bueckers is a shooting guard instead of point guard now -- and a convenient way to have both Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers starters on a named All Star team.

NC State is playing a great game against UConn. Nearly tied at the half. Bueckers is the standout for UConn, Rivers for NC State.

NC State with a "we have arrived" game against UConn, leading after 3 quarters. Rivers is hot. Even if NC State loses they've made a good impression.

Is the upcoming UConn-Minnesota game a statement game opportunity for Minnesota? I don't know.
