Here are some notes and quotes from the postgame press conference. These quotes are not verbatim.

Tracy Claeys:

-We shot ourselves in the foot a few times. Preach stick-together mentality. Cant have snaps over the QB's head. Dropped a punt, didn't like that. Best thing about first games is when they're over. We kept going and found away to win.

-On Tai-yon Devers: He's done well in practice. He has a lot to learn but he can rush the passer. He's been that explosive off the edge in practice. Prob quickest first step of any D-lineman.

-On targeting calls: I'm all for that rule. We just go back and look at the film. Everyone has to lower their target down. I think Mitch had one that was close. We'll go to work on lowering our target in practice.

-On going for two at the end :I'd rather take the chance at getting three yards (two-point conversion) and winning the game.

-I thought after the first quarter we did some good things on offense. I thought missed a couple checks. For the first, game I thought it was good. Snaps have to be 100%, that's what starts the play.

-I thought Rodney did well on the zone-stretch play. Very patient with the zone blocks. He's a tough kid, he doesn't get enough praise for how tough he runs. He blocked well, too.

-On the freshmen: Those kids have been doing it all fall camp. Tyler Johnson, been really pleased with him.

-On Mike Sherels: It's good for him, it's good for football. It's great to have him there. You can sit around the house or come in a for a couple hours and hang around football players. It's seems football coaches heal a hell of a lot faster around football.

-On Mitch running: I thought his running was managed well tonight. I'm happy for that kid. He made some throws. To keep his composure, that's why you have a veteran QB.

Jack Lynn:
They called a pretty game with the screen passes. They knew our weakness and capitalized on that a little bit.

There was no thinking when I got moved to MLB. I wasn't panicking or anything, I've played inside before. I just had to play.

Tai'yon Devers: He's a freak athlete. On the big stage he really showed what he's all about. He's so quick and his get-off is hard for tackles to get out on. Fall camp raised some eyebrows about his talent and he showed that today.

Minnesota benefitted from several dropped passes by OSU. A win is a win.

We had less than 100 yards passing going into the fourth quarter and less than 250 total yards...How is no one bringing this up?

Here are some actual quotes from the postgame presser.

Rodey Smith

On Shannon giving him grief:
“Yeah, I tripped up on a couple of runs that should’ve been longer runs but it’s good that he’s on me about that, making me better. I’m on him, when he gets back I’m going to be on him, and it makes us better. I feel like we work well together.”

On overall performance:
“Yeah, it was definitely a bang. A good way to start the season. But like I said, I’m somewhat disappointed in myself. I feel like I should’ve had some longer runs which would’ve equaled more yards and then on the one I tripped would’ve been a touchdown. So, moving forward I’m definitely going to work on those things.”

Mitch Leidner

On the new offense:
“Yeah definitely, it was a process, but we got the W overall. Those aren’t easy to come by, by any means, so you know, that’s the most important part right there. But it was good to stretch the ball downfield a little bit. We weren’t able to come up with a couple plays, we got a pass interference on one, so that was good. But overall, I had a lot of fun playing out there tonight.”

On being too amped early on in the game:
“Yeah, you could definitely say that. I think it’s a mixture of both being a little too amped and a little bit nervous. We’ve got a couple guys on the offensive line there that hadn’t played in this type of setting before. And we got some young receivers as well that haven’t played before so to get those guys acclimated to the game, unfortunately we don’t get those preseason games like the NFL does where you are able to get adjusted to things like that, but to be able to win a game against Oregon State and have some of that sloppiness there, I think that will definitely help us moving forward.”

The good news is we held them to 317 yards. The bad news is we only gained 280 yards. We made these guys look like 2014 TCU for much of the game.

OSU benefitted from 2 snaps going over the QBs head..It goes both ways that's how football works.

I know honestly with a new offensive coordinator I expected Mitch to throw for at least 500 tonight..Do you want Connor Rhoda? The guy who's never seen the field? Or how about Demry Croft? He looked super solid and ready to go last year.. You think they would be better than the fifth year senior? What do you want/expect to see happen? If you think that Mitch is that bad realize that he won the starting job so the options below him are worse. But yeah you're right, you probably do know better than guys that have been coaching for 20+ years.

Answer me this, Did u like what u saw from the offense tonight and did the play-calling look any different than the last couple years under Limey?

No I was not impressed at all with the play calling but that's not Mitch's responsibility and I don't know why you're blaming him.

We can't expect a Mitch Leidner led offense to transform itself in one game into a 500-yard passing juggernaut.

They have to exorcise all the (s)Limey offense first which will take a couple more games.

We got the W. I'm OK. They know what to work on. We need as lot of polish for the B1G. They have some time to tighten up the penalties and turnovers.
