South Carolina EDGE transfer Jordan Burch has committed to Oregon, he announced Wednesday afternoon on social media.

Burch is a former Five-Star Plus+ recruit who finished 60 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2022. He played his high school football at Columbia (S.C.) Hammond, where he was the No. 11 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

No surprise that Oregon has deep pockets as their key benefactor is Phil Knight, a founder of Nike and an Oregon track alum. He has spent serious money on Oregon athletics. I don't doubt that Bucky is enjoying some of that loot.

Oregon is pretty obviously paying players for commitments, and calling it “NIL,” a major violation of NCAA rules (which they are unable to enforce).

Meanwhile Harbaugh and Michigan will get sanctioned by the NCAA.
And you know that how? Honest question.

Tampering is a far worse offense than just looking at who's in the portal and offering them a nice bag.

They're going to starters on P5 rosters across the country, via back door channels, and offering massive bags to induce them to transfer.

Pathetic joke that they aren't hit with an X year suspension.

Problem I'm sure is, how do you prove it? Players won't rat, they want those bags to keep flowing.

Blaming the NIL for either losing players or not keeping up with your competition falls under the category of blaming the "refs" for not winning games.
Every BIG program has a NILfunding mechanism and every coach has ways of letting the transfers he would like are welcome if they want to move.

And all teams are on a level playing field, right?

Of course not, but when was there ever a level playing field in college sports?
Things change and programs that adapt to the changes do well and the others wallow in mediocrity, the risk of extinction, and self-pity.

Sounds like someone doesn’t know what NIL is.

I see 4 star QB Jaden Rashda is/ might be available as Florida has reneged on their $13 million NIL deal. What is really confusing is that it was guaranteed money. Sad

So the answer is to make it even less level of a playing field? Brilliant!

Below is a recap from The Athletic of the mess going on in Florida right now (As some here on Gopher Hole don't have subscriptions to that site)

What's going on at Florida?
In case you missed it, we’re breaking down one of the wilder stories of the NIL era: The curious case of Jaden Rashada. The four-star quarterback signee is in “purgatory,” G. Allen Taylor writes, as the school works to fix an NIL indiscretion. A quick-ish recap:
  • June 26, 2022: Rashada commits to Miami.
  • Nov. 10: Rashada and a Florida donor collective agree on an NIL deal exceeding $13 million, and he flips his commitment to the Gators.
  • Dec. 7: The collective’s CEO sends a termination letter regarding the contract, Taylor reports. There are conflicting accounts about why the deal crumbled and who pledged to pay what.
  • Dec. 21: Coach Billy Napier’s national signing day news conference is delayed 67 minutes. Rashada’s name, initially missing from the list of signees, is added at the last minute.
  • Dec. 29-Jan. 3: Rashada and his family make glowing comments about Napier and indicate the recruit plans to enroll early.
  • Jan. 10: He doesn’t.
One of Taylor’s sources says Rashada won’t be enrolling at Florida. There’s also the potential for litigation, hinging upon whether the November contract is binding. Florida collectives are offering a lesser deal (still above seven figures) — with the caveat that Rashada releases everyone from all previous claims.

Again: We’re talking seven-plus figures for a four-star recruit. Stay tuned!

Read the full story on the Athletic and it is messy. Wish they would stop calling these deals NIL because they are 100% not NIL deals but rather just a way to openly pay for play in Football and Basketball. At least the high dollar ones are, there might be some legit NIL deals out there in college football where the player actually is being compensated for a company using their Name Image or Likenss.

Players WILL rat eventually. When these NLI deals fall through for some 5 star players and they end up with nothing because they weren't as good as advertised, the truth will come out. Gonna be very interesting to hear these stories 3-4 years from now.....

Absolutely.

Whenever you have a "wild west", as it 100% is right now, there have to be all kinds of crazy shenanigans going on behind closed doors.

Think it's pretty obvious if you connect the dots, but some people truly believe amateurism is on the up and up
So are the gophers opening up the NIL money when they sign some of these players too?

I'm sure we have some but it's nowhere near what some of these other programs have.

I wonder how many coaches have recently decided or will soon decide to…pursue NFL employment. The massive roster churn, the NIL idiocy, babysitting the team, recruiting high schoolers -and their parents and agents and handlers - dealing with school administrations and PR on top of it all has to be a major headache. Red Bull mandatory.

Gonna have to start calling you Primal Plato! 🤣

Sure. Bryce Young was paid for being in the Fansville Dr. Pepper commercials. That's a legit endorsement deal.

There 100% are legit uses of NIL, that would certainly be an example of it. But we all know that this big money being thrown at recruits and portal players has nothing to do with NIL and is smiply a way to openly pay players in order to get them to commit.

For example.....it was rumored/confirmed that Bucky got a good sized amount of money from Oregon. That wasn't tied to an endorsement or marketing deal, it was just money he was paid to help him make the decision to go to Oregon. Not NIL, just a payment. Fully legal in the current landscape of college football just not what NIL was ever supposed to be.

It's not fair, but life isn't fair. There's a special place in hell for Phil Knight.
Why? Because he decided to become a major benefactor to his alma mater? As if we would somehow bitch and moan if the Gophers had a sugar daddy like that? I think not.

One interesting question though. Phil is 84 years old. When he dies, will the money spigot turn off?
Sounds like someone doesn’t know what NIL is.
Sounds like someone is naive enough to think that players haven't been being paid for decades.

It's more about the getting rich off of forced child labor, imo.
