2 things:

In the NFL, it’s not uncommon for the home team to wear white due to the heat. That’s not at play here.

Secondly, I don’t think NMSU even has their new home jerseys. In the uniwatch article, there is a picture of them wearing jerseys with a Sun Belt conference patch and they are now independent.

Classic for the Gophers would be a number of things. The era you're referencing was Maroon Jersey's with Gold or Maroon numbers. White helmets and pants with Maroon and Gold Stripes on them.

Chrome helmets or white would be my choice, but whatever gets the kids to play the best is most important.
