One more spot open, who fills it?

Suppose he could have done both.

it helps when you have a recent history of winning... the gophers walk on program will be much different once they win...

There were a couple of walk-ons who played prominent roles during, arguably, the toughest stretch of this past season. They proved they could play and play well in the Big Ten. They deserve but will likely not get a '12 scholarship for the reason you give.

Shabazz is doing fine and will be starting. Why would Reusse start crap and spread rumors about this kid?

He is the fastest Gopher on the team (hand timed) with a 4.4 - 40

Didn't Kill mention something about awarding scholarships to Walk-ons after two years

I thought I heard him make the comment on the Sports huddle a week ago that you can
award the Walk-ons a year to year scholarship after they have been in the program for two
years and it does not count against your yearly 25 signing limit or counting the 3 back as long
as you remain within in the 85 scholarship limit. Could most likely be why they await to award these to walk-ons is because of this rule.

You are right about the reg. It is NCAA Bylaw 15.5.6.3.6. If you've done 2 years of the program then you don't count against the 25 for year 3 but do against the 85.

The walk-ons to which I referred have been in the program for 2 years. Unfortunately for them, there is, reportedly, only one scholarship left (under the 85 limit) and the coaches are looking to use it on another recruit.

I can understand what the coaches are trying to do and I don't necessarily fault them for it, but it is a bit of a rip-off for those walk-ons who out-produced a number of their scholarship peers but are left to pay for yet another year on their own dime.

Then again, that's life.

These kids that Walk On have a pretty firm understanding of the situation. They understand that it is nearly impossible for them to earn a scholarship the first two seasons. I don't have a problem with that at all.

I would have a problem with the U taking away a scholarship from a guy like Aaron Hill who has earned it and will be playing a ton next season.

Not True. It is not rare for walk-ons who do earn scholarships to do so within the first 2 years. It may not be common but it is certainly not nearly impossible as you claim. In addition, the walk-ons to which I referred have already played 2 years and will be entering their 3rd year in 2012. So your point is not applicable in this particular instance.

Hence the word "nearly". It's very rare for a walk on to earn a scholarship in their first two seasons. It's obviously not impossible just rare, and the walk ons fully understand that.

As to the players you mentioned, I assumed you were talking about players in their first two years because that was the bylaw you mentioned. I didn't see where you mentioned any players, but I only skimmed some of the messages and since the bylaw you mentioned was talking about players in their first two years, I deduced you were still talking about those players.

There is also an element of awarding scholarships to walk ons that hasn't been discussed. A team gets 85 scholarships for the season, no coach is going to waste any of those scholarships. For instance, lets say we currently have 1 extra scholarship and we decide not to add anyone. Coach Kill will go to one of the walk ons and explain to them that we have an additional scholarship offer for THIS YEAR, and we'd like to offer it, with no promises that it will continue. Additionally, this would happen if a kid is deemed medically unable to play in July and we don't bring anyone else in. The awarding of scholarships to walk ons has a little more subtlety than it appears at face value.

I am thinking we need to add another recruit on scholly vs giving it to a current walk-on player because we need more bodies and depth across the board.

I'd trust whatever the coaches wanted to do, but unless they could snag a JuCo MLB who could play immediately and be a significant upgrade over Ryan Grant / Aaron Hill / Matilus / Rallis (if he gets snaps in the middle)...I don't really see the point in not giving it to a walk on for the year and saving it for next season.

Kill wants more bodies.
