On the bright side thread

I'm actually able to see the humor in the rage and overreaction. The usual culprits spew their bile, those on the fence jump to the dark side, the solid, rational and experienced ones deal with their disappointment, express it and realize in sports -- like life -- upsets happen.

This is still a good team. We have good players and coaches. We have mostly overcome what feels to me like a high percentage of borderline calls made that shouldn't be, and not made that should. The oblong ball isn't bouncing our way and we're not yet elite to win every game without unflinching superior effort.

Prior to yesterday, if I was given the option of winning 4 of the last 5, I would have easily chosen this one to be the loss. Anyone agree?

Agree. Although yesterday's game was probably nowhere near as big of an upset as it seemed. The polls are messed up. Minnesota is clearly not a top 25 team, more like top 40 or 50. Our talent level seems on par with Illinois and I'll bet the recruiting rankings the last four years would support that opinion. What I wish I were more astute about is our offensive and defensive lines. Are they good enough to compete with the last four teams we play this season? Also, while I pull hard for Mr. Leidner and the receivers, I just wonder as well if they are good enough to beat those last four teams. Lots of questions, not a lot of answers here. I'd be happy with one more win and thrilled with two more and a bowl win!

Nice Post! I don't get why some can't be very disappointed without needing a bunch of players benched, coaches fired, and freshman playing.

Agreed. In fact, I think the bottom ten teams in the conference are not all that far from each other in terms of potential. It's just that some of those teams started the season behind some others but are improving. A true upset would be any of the bottom ten beating any of the top four and, so far, only Northwestern has managed to do that.

Well, yes, I do agree in that we've dominated Illinois in recent years and they probably owed us one. However, we would seem to have virtually no chance of winning four of the last five and this one seemed to be the most winnable game of those five. I'll be satisfied with a 7-5 season at this point and will probably be happier if the 7th win happens against Iowa than if it had happened against Illinois.

Here's some things we can focus on: One, we tried hard. And two, we're still dear friends!
