Didn't see a thread on this, but maybe I missed it. The World-Herald, which has one of the best sports sections around, chose the Gophers to win the West with a 9-3 record, same as the huskers, but with Gophers beating Huskers in Minneapolis. They ran a huge football preview (3 separate sections) Sunday. Can't see 9-3 happening, but...

Can't see 9-3 either. !0-2 at least.

We'll know a lot more Friday morning.

Are you predicting our game will go into overtime and extend past midnight!!!!!!!!!!! Although that would be fun to watch, I'd rather just beat them in 4 qtrs so I can get more celebrating time in at the bars.

Can the city of Minneapolis trade the Strib for the Omaha World-Herald somehow? It seems like the only paper that is able to find positives with the Gopher football program.

WTF are you talking about? Joe C's work has been overwhelmingly positive including a long story on Kill in the Sunday paper.

Here is the link to the article referenced in the OP:

With Nebraska and Wisconsin bringing in new coaching staffs, Minnesota has a chance to take the Big Ten West title. Where do the rest of the teams fall? Lee Barfknecht previews the division.

* * *
1. MINNESOTA

Coach: Jerry Kill, fifth year, 25-26

2014 record: 8-5, (5-3, T-second)

Returning starters: 14 (5 offense, 7 defense, 2 kickers)

Overall: Program-fixer Jerry Kill has the Gophers on the move, going from 3-9 to 6-7 to 8-5 twice. With a roster full of his recruits now, Minnesota wants more and is positioned to take it with Wisconsin and Nebraska dealing with coaching changes.

Offense Big Ten rank: 4

TE Maxx Williams leaving for the NFL was a big blow. But QB Mitch Leidner keeps making steady improvement, and there is much more speed at RB and WR to draw on. The offensive line — all juniors and seniors — averages 308 pounds.

Defense Big Ten rank: 3

The secondary might be the country’s best, as both corners and both safeties are honors candidates. The defensive line is young but sneaky good. And the LBs, even with stud MLB Damien Wilson gone, sparkled in spring ball.

Coaching Big Ten rank: 4

Kill, with a cluster of longtime assistants, has earned strong respect throughout the league. That group makes the best of what they’ve got. Now, the talent level and overall athleticism are much improved.

Intangibles Big Ten rank: 3

Despite the progress under Kill, many still think the Gophers are maxed out as an eight-win program. The players and coaches are out to prove that wrong. And this might be the perfect year to do that.

Coachspeak: “I’ve never been worried about where you are picked. I worry about where we’re at the end of the year. We firmly believe we’ll be a more athletic team and a better football team than a year ago.” — Jerry Kill

Prediction: 9-3, 6-2, Citrus Bowl (Orlando)

It's quite pathetic when the only examples of positive Gopher football pieces come from the Strib beat writer.

Go Gophers!!

This is exactly how I feel about the gophers and I would add Michigan (and now Illinois) coaching changes actually making this schedule easier than last year. First year under a new coach for a program that is in flux is almost always a step down. First loss Wisconsin gets (probably this weekend) will start turmoil between BA and PC because that is how that program rolls. Harbaugh will probably run a dozen kids off the Michigan team before we play and eventually he will replace with better, but not this year. Nebraska has bigger problems than Bo Pelini.

Sure we play Ohio State and TCU, but we played them last year and lost, can't do any worse this year and there is always the upset possibility that we do better.

We'll know a lot more Friday morning.

I am going to the game so I plan on knowing Thursday. I certainly hope the game is over before midnight!

In diehard's defense, I believe he lives in North Carolina, so there's a good chance he may not know until Friday just after midnight, his time!

Go Gophers!!

We also wouldn't be 9-3 if we won the Big Ten West. We'd play in the Big Ten Championship game and be 10-3 or 9-4.

Thanks for the info. His comment was no big deal but seemed a little strange to me. Now it makes sense.

This is pretty spot on SJU. Joe C has been doing an outstading job.
