per the Omaha World Herald:
I’m buying what Minnesota is selling. I’m picking the Gophers, who haven’t claimed any sort of conference title since 1967, to win the West.
Since Kill arrived, I’ve made a point to sit with him at Big Ten media days. It’s always educational. The small-town Kansan (Cheney, pop. 2,100) is plain-spoken yet interesting and perceptive. He’s willing to carve through the baloney you get in a lot of interviews.
The more I see of the 53-year-old Kill and his program, the more it reminds me of Bill Snyder’s tough-minded work in transforming Kansas State football.
The one thing Minnesota doesn’t have is a fancy football complex. That is expected to change when ground is broken on such a building in September.
“It’s an arms race,” Kill said. “Other than the stadium, we haven’t built anything since Lou Holtz was here (1984-85), as far as day-to-day operations. We’ve had to do it the hard way, which is what we’ve done everywhere I’ve been. Then we get the facilities built, and I leave.”
This time, Kill is staying.
“I’m too damn old,” he said, “to move again.”
That’s good news for Minnesota, and not so good for the rest of the Big Ten West.
