per the World Herald:

A long time ago, at a Skywriters Tour dinner when Mason was at Kansas, he said something that applies directly to Kill.

“Some guys coach because they love to coach,” Mason said. “Some guys coach because they love ‘to be’ the coach,” meaning they like the money and the status that goes with the position more than the game.

Jerry Kill loved to coach. He would coach a game in a supermarket parking lot if that’s where it was scheduled. Now, after 32 years in the business, his body won’t let him coach anymore.

“I feel like I’ve had a bomb dropped on me,” Kill said. So do his family, his players and college football as a whole.

Kill left every program he ever coached better than he found it. After his five years at Minnesota, his record in that regard remains perfect — even with an imperfect end to his career.
