per the World Herald:

The theme of the summer football magazines is that Minnesota will have a better team in 2014 but a worse record than its 8-5 in 2013.

Why? The schedule.

With Big Ten East Division crossover games against Ohio State and Michigan, a nonconference trip to TCU and back-to-back West Division road games to end the season against Nebraska and Wisconsin, the predictors think that’s too bumpy a path for the Gophers to get to nine wins.

UM quarterback Mitch Leidner politely calls baloney on that.

“We know this team is better and we know we’re going to have a better record,” said the redshirt sophomore from Lakeville, Minnesota. “Our entire team has high expectations.

“People always want to overlook us. We have our diehard local fans, but there are a lot of people waiting for us to turn the corner. This year is going to be the year.”

Go Gophers!!

Nebraska not only has excellent fans, but good media as well. The are a great addition.

Article sounds good to me! I don't have a problem with it!

Totally agree. I live in CO and wind up next to Husker fans all the time at the bar - very friendly folks. All my drinks were paid for by the big red faithful after we beat them last year. All they could say is that we beat them fair and square...and that Taylor Martinez sucks.

I've also driven through the state of Nebraska plenty of times and been very entertained by their sports talk radio. It's definitely not the most thrilling ride on I-80.

Go Gophers!!

First, I want to thank Mitch for the shout out!

Second, agree that Nebraska is a high quality addition to the conference. All the way around.

Third, our D will guarantee another 8 wins. How many more will our O add to that? The schedule is tough, but a 10 win season before the bowl game would not surprise me. I see tOSU coming to TCF to play a hungry undefeated Gopher team and anything can happen that day!

Regardless of how the season goes, we are headed in the right direction, one that is unfamiliar to most Gopher fans and a bit scary for that reason.

+1. Well said, MrC!

I've said this a bunch of time before, but my wife grew up in Lincoln and went to UNL (I guess that's what the majority of them call it - University of Nebraska, Lincoln).

So I get down there at least 2 times a year, and the often have a separate section of the paper dedicated to the Huskers. It's impressive. And they don't just cover the Huskers, they are looking at college football at the B10 level, nationally, etc. They do a great job of informed reporting, the one thing that is largely lacking in the Twin Cities market.

I honestly did not believe the Gophers would beat Nebraska again in my lifetime. Still find it hard to believe. But you are all correct - their fans are outstanding and their tradition, entwined with our own, is one of the very best.

For those of you too young to remember, the Sunday Tribune used to have the sports section on peach colored paper. Called it the "Peach Sports". Remember reading it each Sunday morning and spending a lot of time going over the Gophers game from the day before. Along, of course, with the preview of the next week's game. Amazing coverage

Of course that was pre-Twins and Vikings. Now we're almost an after thought, but I think that's changing.
