OL Report: Iowa: Full Game

It is painful watching this game seeing as how we controlled the LOS all half, yet couldn't put the ball in the end zone on our other two successful drives.
The Running game:
Andries: 100% on 29 plays
Olson: 100% on 29plays:
JMS: 90% on 29 plays.
Faalele: 90% on 29 plays He got tagged with a holding call which was marginal considering all that they let go.
Schlueter: 86% on 29 plays
Ruschmeyer: 100% on 2 plays
Kieft: 91% on 22 plays.
BSF: 57% on 7 play
Boe: 100% on 2 plays

The Passing game
Andries: 100% on 8 plays
Olson: 113% on 8 plays Connor and JMS buried their man on the Ko TD pass, thus the 5 higher than 100
JMS: 113% on 8 plays
Faalele: 88% on 8 plays
Schlueter: 100% on 8 plays:
Ruschmeyer: 100% on 2 plays
Kieft: 100% on 1 play
Boe: 100% on 1 play
Didn't put the ball up much this half. Can see that to some extent as we were having success on the ground, but we didn't look to attack their secondary often enough. The OL did well in picking up the Iowa stunts and gave Tanner time to make a throw. (Just not fond of our route concepts and having 3 guys run a route but only one of them is a viable option because the other two are just out there to take up a defender.) Also could have been flagged on a couple pass plays for ineligible down field but the refs missed it.
 


Was going to wait for the full report, but might as well say it now since I'm pretty sure he's going to grade out well for the game.

Hat's off to Sam Schlueter for the strong rebound!


If I'm going to call a guy out for some bad plays, then I need to call him out for fixing it and responding in an important game!
 

It really is sad. Whether you want to blame it on coaching or a few critical missed opportunities by the players, MN probably walks away with the win in 75 - 80% of games in which they dominated the LOS and stat line so thoroughly. This just wasn't one of them. Frustrating and sad.

We didn't score enough TD's when we got down near the endzone. And all three of their TD's came on long plays that were simply three bad plays/mistakes by one guy (each time) on our defense.

One of those games.
 


In the second half our OL was good, but were a little less dominant. We also ran out of the super jumbo package a few more times. Overall though we still did a really nice job of moving or shielding the DL from getting to the ball carrier. Thought a couple times the RB missed or didn't stick with the run to the designed hole and didn't gain good yards, but all in all it was still a good half of moving the ball on the ground.
The Running game:
Andries: 100% on 19 plays
Olson: 89% on 19plays:
JMS: 84% on 19 plays.
Faalele: 79% on 29 plays
Schlueter: 84% on 29 plays
Ruschmeyer: 100% on 5 plays
Kieft: 88% on 17 plays.
BSF: 100% on 4 play
Boe: 60% on 5 plays

The Passing game
Andries: 76% on 25 plays His low percent is mainly due to late in the game Iowa wasn't sending anyone at either Guard so he would have nobody to block. Although he did get beat early in the half on a pass play.
Olson: 60% on 25 plays He had a similar reason as Blaise. His one big miss was due to the defensive tackle that grabbed inside his shoulder pad to allow the DE to loop around for the sack. Can't believe they missed that call.
JMS: 100% on 25 plays
Faalele: 96% on 25 plays
Schlueter: 92% on 25 plays:
Kieft: 83% on 6 plays
BSF: 100% on 3 plays
This half we did attack through the air more, even before it was late in the game and we were playing catch up. Our split was at 19 runs to 15 passes before our last two possessions when we threw it on every down.
We also ran more plays in this game than in any other game this season.

Still thinking you must be part of the Kieft clan. He missed his block twice on the first two drives. Sad

At the start of the game?
He was in for the first two plays: 1st play he lined up at left wing, it was a pass and he blocked the DE. 2nd play he lined up in the same location on a running play wide right and he blocked the DE again sealing him off but Ky cut it back into the DE who was in on the tackle after a 4 yard gain. He certainly made his block there. We threw it on 3rd down to BSF and Ko was not in, then punted.
Series 2: 1st play in the same spot just off of Sam S. we run the toss play left and he gets out and blocks the LB while Bucky turns it upfield for a 16 yard gain. Play 2 he moves to the right wing and bocks down on the DE. Bucky only gains 2 as the LB was able to scrape over the top of that and make the play. Play 3 is similar except Ky runs it and this time after blocking the DE he slides up to the LB and gets a piece of him as we gain over 8 yards for a first down. Play 4 he lines up at left wing again only in a WR stance. It's a pass play which he runs across the formation and into a route. The next play he is at left wing, goes in motion to the right side and we run the toss sweep to the right. Ko gets upfield to the LB and blocks him to the sideline for a good 5 yards which allows Bucky to cut it back for a 15 yard gain. Next play he is lined up in the slot to right. We run the same toss right to Bucky and Ko gets up to the LB over him and takes him out of the play. Gain of 4. Next 4 plays BSF is in for him and we move the ball to the 5. He comes back in and is lined up as a wing to the right in a bunch formation. Blocks the LB to the goal line, we gain a yard. Next play he's in the same spot. We run PA and Ko is running open to the back corner of endzone. Tanner sees the CB of Iowa sitting out there so doesn't throw it and rolls out more. By that time the LB/S are able to catch up to KO and Tanner throws it a little high and hot for him to catch it. Not sure Tanner would have been able to run it in as the CB for Iowa was sitting just into the endzone and had he thrown it earlier to Ko I believe the CB would have picked it off. On third and goal he is on the sideline. We run it left with Ky to the 2 and kick a fg.
Not sure where in either of those two series you are seeing a play where Ko missed a block.
 

I like the phases that games are won in lost in the trenches. Doesn't look like it happened in this case.
 



2nd half
1st series: Play 1 lined up at right wing, RPO and he blocks the DE on a throw. 2nd play he lines up slot wide right and runs a 7 yard curl route. Tanner hits him for a gain of 12 (It’s the play where the Iowa LB gets a 15 yard roughness penalty that was close to targeting.) Play 3 he is at left wing again on a running play to the right. Ko cuts off the DE, but doesn’t do a great job on the play although he does enough. No gain on play. Next play he is not on the field on 2nd and 10. Nor is he on 3rd down.

2nd series: 1st play he is on the right wing. Pass play left. He steps in front of DE and gets a hand on him, but DE isn’t really rushing, pass left is out quickly and knocked down by Iowa. Next play he is at TE on right. We run a half roll that way and he blocks the DE. Gain of 6. Next play he’s not in. 1st down. Next play he’s at right wing. He doesn’t fire out but slowly moves down the field and makes contact with a LB not a crushing block but he does something. Ky runs for 13 inside of that. Next play at right wing. Play action fake run left and he blocks the right DE. Big gain to CAB to Iowa 35. Next play at left Wing. He steps up field as he is doing that he check the DE who is running straight up field into our backfield. He lets him go and blocks the LB. The DE is too deep and Bucky gains 5. He didn’t need to block the DE as the DE took himself out of the play. He moves up field and seals off the LB so not a missed block. Gain of 4. Now we run our super Jumbo group out with 7 OL and Ko. He is wing left with all 7 OL to his right. He blocks the outside man on his side. Ky who is lined up on left takes hand off and cuts to the right behind Nathan and Daniel for a gain of 12 down to the 19. Next play we are 1st and 10 at 19 and run the same formation and play. Really didn’t like this call here. Ko does and even better job on the outside guy to his side, but Ky tries to do the same thing and there is no opening because the DT over Nathan B drives him back, Ky dances around and ends up gaining a yard. We go back to a 2 TE set with Ko at Left TE and BSF on his wing. We RUTM on the right side for a minimal gain (again a call I didn't like on 2nd and 9). Ko who is on the left seals off the OLB/S from getting to the ball carrier. Not a great block but he does his job. On third and 7 he’s not in and we throw short to BSF on a play similar to the first series of the game. Both times we are stopped short of a first down. This time we kick a FG
Not sure what you were watching but he didn't miss any blocks to start the second half either.
