Okay music lovers. At CSU they played a half a dozen songs from the 60's to the 80's

Cost money to have the rights for the music, band has to pay fees for copyrights

Seems I struck a nerve with the 'Brandy' reference. Perhaps 'Domino' would also be popular.

I was in the Marching Band in the early '90's- and appreciate and respect the time and effort it takes to put together a show and arrange the music. That being said- between the music played in the stadium and some of the halftime shows- it can feel like a time warp. I'm pretty sure either last year or the year before, the Marching Band did a show that was a "#1 Hits from 1973 (or '74)' theme. You could literally see the excitement leaking out of the stadium like air in a balloon. It was amazing.

I know not all selections can be home runs, but someone needs to do a better job picking music for the band and for the stadium in general.

Mr Doug, the band still wears the same uniform you wore back then when it was new, it's not like when you were in the band and athletics still provided financial support for the band to play on game days and for an annual Big 10 trip. Athletics pays virtually next to nothing towards the Minnesota band these days. They have had to fund raise a ton for the new uniforms.
It's the music library and the school of music, the schools old library dictates what the marching band plays at games. As with anything everything they play has to have the appropriate licenses and fees have to be paid for. Comes down do you want to use the pitiful amount of money you are allotted to pay staff salary's(limits the talent pool) most of the instructional staff volunteers a lot of time or pay rights fees for a lot of new music. I don't envy the current directors budget compared to when Athletics actually supported the group, he does a lot with very little support from the U or the athletics program for that matter. Those that criticize the band or the director can take a flying leap, with their opinions, they have no idea how hard those kids have to work, the long hours the staff puts in busting there tails, or to have the group organize in such a short period of time and with so many new people, to have such a large group and work there a$$es off to put on one of the best shows in the Big 10.
If you travel you know even Michigan doesn't hold a candle to the Pride of Minnesota's sound or effort, just because they are miked up and play hail to the Victors a thousand times doesn't mean Michigan is good. Nebraskas band doesn't have near the sound ours does and plays the same Hokey song play after play. Same with Wisconsin, do you really want to listen to the Budweiser theme over and over again or watch prancing deers play Tuba and Trumpet? We have a top three program in the Big 10 with a shoe string budget, compared to what Penn State, Michigan State and Michigan and Ohio State all receive from athletics. Given what those other groups have our group puts on a first class effort every week with a cheap A$$ budget from the U. Rubes that know nothing about music have no idea how good and how blessed we are to have a top Big 10 marching band that get's very little thanks for what they do.

Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) might very well be the finest song ever written. It has a place in my heart, but no place at a college football game.

Ruppert's like a crotchety old bus driver who makes the kids listen to the farm report when the majority of them would prefer to listen to KDWB.

Listen Junior, if you had a clue you would be dangerous. Go to a wedding reception. What do they play? It's all music from the 60's to the early 90's. What music is is blasting through the bars on their sound systems? It's not " What does the fox say" Tell you what pal. I'll meet you anytime, anywhere on the golf course, or for that matter the driving range and let's man up and drive the golf ball then we'll see who is crotchety.

A football game isn't a wedding reception.

I guess blame falls on the Athletic Department then- I was not aware they currently provided no support. Perhaps at some point they will turn their eye towards this aspect of 'gameday experience' and decide the band is worth it. I was lucky enough to have those new uniforms my first year.

You don't have to lecture me about the hours and effort that go into it. I will never criticize the effort. I could only do it for 2 years because of the time commitment it took. Spat camp, daily practices, Wednesday night at Northup, Friday night and Saturday Morning's (back when Saturday night games were played in the dome)- the time commitment was insane- and you had to pay for class credit to be in the band on top of it all. I remember when I was in band- and even back then- shaking my head at a lot of the music we played.

I consider the U to have the 2nd Best Marching Band in the Big Ten and we definitely have the best school songs- not even close. If they didn't put on shows with 30 year old music- they would be even better.

You're right. I apologize. The U should play the Chicken Dance and the Hokey Pokey between the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Believe it or not, I've actually been to a wedding reception. I've heard everything from Frankie Yankovic to Slayer. Danny and the Juniors to Justin Bieber. Any DJ worth his salt plays what the couple wants to hear and takes requests from the audience. You keep beating the drum to get the U to play "To Sir With Love" by Lulu though. Let me know how that works out for you.

I picture him more as Mr. Bookman, library cop, from Seinfeld.

Sorry about the second part Doug

Didn't mean the second part directed towards you it was that ******-like post by someone else about the Thursday night band fail that part was directed at. I already figured you knew about all of the time commitment being an alumnus and former member that is all. It is Athletics that provides no support yet they expect first class game experience in the stands.

Back on topic, Ruppert why do you start these Disk Jockey stadium threads. We get you love oldies, the older 60's, 70's and 80's music, why are you arguing about it on Gopherhole. If your really that passionate about it and feel the need, or feel your generation of music lovers is under-represented on music selections in stadium on Gopher football game days, I am sure there is an appropriate department like game day operations or stadium operations in the athletic department that you can contact and argue your case for. Be prepared to have some demographic information for the season ticket base, average or prospective ticket buyers and such, to argue your point.
Arguing about it on Gopherhole isn't going to lead to you achieving any of what you likely want the outcome to be. That is all.

And if that doesn't settle it, the next day you can have a shoot-out at the shuffle board court.

Good Lord, Rupert, why do you always have to prove the stereotype right about us Seniors?!?

I love the crabby bus driver bit. I had one of those. We'd have loved to hear KDWB or WLOL, but all he wanted was WCCO.

Regarding the music, there's always going to be room at a game to play a few classic rock hits, but the students who need to be enticed to come to games and then somehow converted into being fans after they graduate want to hear their music, not mom and dad's or grandma and grandpa's. If it's not the bar/party singalongs like "Livin' On a Prayer", "Don't Stop Believing" or "Sweet Caroline", the younger fans aren't all that interested. Those songs may have more staying power than "Gangnam Style" or "What The Fox Says", but the kids are going to get into the hot songs of the moment more than stuff from the KQRS playlist all in all.

This is right. There’s a pretty easy formula for a college party environment: Mostly contemporary songs, and occasionally mix in some classics, which could range from Chubby Checker to the Backstreet Boys for today’s young wonks. I learned this as a guy in my 20s who knows more songs by the Chad Mitchell Trio than Justin Bieber. My favorite song was recorded by The Weavers. Nobody my age wants to listen to my music choices, but I DJ’ed some great parties with this formula.

Also, as the Gopher Athletic Department has proved, it’s not a party without constant advertisements and 16 “families of the game.”

Totally agree. Whenever I see the kids up and rocking the stadium to whatever the flavor of the month song is, I tell my 50-some year old buddies this is great! Play some more of this sh*t! Any time you can get the students engaged and having a good time - that's a good thing. I could care less if I don't hear "my music". Let's get these kids hooked on coming to the game, having a good time, and hopefully becoming season-ticket holders.

Exaggerated points of view is all you have pal. You're effing tone deaf.

Ruppert just want representation for the oldies crowd, many of whom have been long time season ticket holders are many of the seats in the unfilled stadium.

Look around the country, or even east to our neighbor, some oldies go over very well with all fans. No one wants all oldies.

Though I do admit he won't get any more agreements from the folks on GH.

Ruppert: stick to your guns. Your thread seems to be about the only action on the board tonight. It would appear that everyone participating in the thread is there of their own free will and because they want to make some sort of comment. And, it is generating hits for GH. It is a public service thread! It is a topic many people seem to have an opinion on. There is one thing for sure: the use of that jumbo and the sound system in TCF has not exactly covered itself with glory on Game Day Saturdays. Never let 'em get you down Ruppert! "Rock 'n Roll NEVER forgets..."

Welcome back Wren, you are missed, but incorrect in this matter.

The Geezers like me and my 75 year old parents do not tend to react much to music, in fact unlike Rupert, none of them would even notice if there was no music played at all over the PA system.

The music played over the PA system has one function only, to generate excitement and noise by the Students and anyone under 80 that also might buy into that wave.

Ruppy and others that cannot embrace the 3/4Q break and feel a need to make the music selection about themselves, need to get over it and shut up. Most people over 60 never noticed the music in the old days and need to shut up now.

Dumb post. Would you like me to send you some videos of some 'oldies' being enjoyed by young and old at other stadiums?

I'm 66 and of :cool02:sound mind, but maybe when I reach my 70's..who knows.
