More players bail from the B1G:

– Freshmen Tori McCoy and Kiara Lewis have both announced their intentions to leave the Ohio State women’s basketball program and seek a transfer to another school.

“Kiara and Tori are both great student-athletes and I wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavors,” said Ohio State head coach Kevin McGuff.

Lewis started the final 15 games of the season and averaged 6.7 points and 1.8 assists in over 19 minutes per game. McCoy, who was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, averaged 8.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game and blocked a team-high 59 shots. Both players saw action in all 35 games for the Buckeyes this season
 


Wonder if integrating three starter transfers into a team is hard?

Miserable in Columbus.


Former St. Thomas More All-American Tori McCoy made the Big Ten’s All-Freshman team this year at Ohio State, but she was miserable throughout the season, her father, Tim, said...


...“There isn’t one issue you can really pinpoint,” Tim McCoy said. “There’s quite a few of them. … It really all boils down to happiness. She was miserable every day.”

The 6-foot-4 freshman and her family envisioned that she’d play on the perimeter in college. After turning down schools because of their desire to play her in the post, she chose Ohio State, envisioning she’d play a versatile role.

It didn’t pan out that way. McCoy worked her way into the starting lineup toward the end of the year, but she wasn’t playing the role she hoped she would, her father said...


...She has elected to have calls from coaches directed to her parents, Tim said, and they have been flooded with calls and texts from coaches, including Baylor, Kansas State, Maryland, Louisville and others, and he received correspondence from Marquette during his interview with The News-Gazette. Illinois was not one of those schools, and Tim said the Illini won’t be in the running.
 

If Illinois could be in the running (no Big Ten conflict?), does that mean Minnesota could be in the running? Too bad we're not really seen as a prime destination other than to malcontent or homesick Minnesota players.

Ohio State schedules Stanford and UConn.

The Buckeyes are set to open the 2017-18 season against Stanford and former head coach Tara VanDerveer the school announced April 24. The Cardinal, which have been led by VanDerveer since 1985, are coming off of an appearance in the 2017 Final Four after compiling a 32-6 record.

VanDerveer and the Cardinal are set to take on the Buckeyes in Ohio State's season opener on Nov. 10 at St. John Arena in what will be VanDerveer's first game back in Columbus since coaching her final game for the Buckeyes in 1985. While the head coach at Ohio State, VanDerveer led the Buckeyes to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1982 and their first Elite Eight in 1985. She compiled a record of 110-37 in five seasons as Ohio State's head coach.

In addition to the game against the Cardinal, Ohio State also officially announced yet another matchup against UConn which will be apart of the "Countdown To Columbus" event. The showcase will feature the Buckeyes taking on the Huskies and also Stanford taking on Louisville in a pair of games scheduled for Nov. 12 at Nationwide Arena.
 

What on earth is going on at Ohio State? The Buckeyes seem to be in the market for more chemistry-busting transfers but there was an interesting reminder on Raoul's twitter yesterday that OSU has not had a commitment in more than a year a half.
So I decided to check out OSU's roster. Lots of talent for next year but, as of now, they would have a grand total of three players for 2018 (one of whom is the infrequently-employed Chelsea Mitchell), since still-listed Kianna Holland has medically retired.

The Buckeyes' past, present and hazy future.


But when taking a step back and looking past this upcoming season, which holds great promise, one thing becomes clear — the future of Ohio State seems bleak, especially when compared to the talent on this year’s team.

Ohio State’s roster consists of just nine players on scholarship. It returns seven players who have played significant minutes in prior seasons. Five of those players are either seniors or redshirt seniors. Only one player — sophomore guard Jensen Caretti — has more than two seasons of eligibility remaining. The Buckeyes did not add a single freshman or transfer this season. They only have one high-school prospect committed.

The two most promising freshmen last year, forward Tori McCoy and guard Kiara Lewis, transferred to Marquette and Syracuse, respectively. McCoy averaged 8.1 points per game in 35 appearances and 10 starts, while Lewis averaged 6.7 points per game in 35 games and 15 starts. Tim McCoy, Tori’s father, told the News-Gazette Tori left Ohio State because she was unhappy and said his daughter “was miserable every day.”
When asked what she want to achieve in her final season, Mitchell said it was simple — she just wants to be able to “play happy,” seeming to confirm the dissatisfaction of last year.

“We’ve always been a team where if something goes wrong, our season just is in shatters,” Mitchell said. “That’s how it feels. I just want everybody to play, just play as free as possible. And I think that would take care of a lot of things, myself included.”..


...McGuff expressed displeasure at the difficulty of landing recruits, despite having four open scholarships on the current roster and just four scholarship players returning for the 2018-19 season.

“In theory, it should be easier, but people want to play,” McGuff said. “But then all of a sudden you get, ‘Who am I going to play with?’ You get all these questions, it’s different. Everybody wants to play on a great team, but play right away. It’s like, eh, those things don’t always go hand in hand. If there’s opportunity, then you can play right away and then maybe that, the group you come in with evolves into a great time, sort of like the people we have now that are seniors.”

McGuff was hired in 2013 to replace Jim Foster, whose teams did not reach the Elite 8 in his 11 seasons at Ohio State, despite the Buckeyes making the NCAA tournament in his first 10 seasons at the helm.

But McGuff’s teams have had similar issues. The Buckeyes missed the tournament his first year, made the second round in 2015 and reached the Sweet Sixteen the past two seasons. The Buckeyes have shown no challenges reaching the tournament, but the inability to advance further in the postseason has plagued the team through the past two coaching tenures.

Injuries and depth remain a problem for the Buckeyes.


But for the Ohio State women’s basketball team, the available roster likely will be limited for an exhibition on Sunday at Value City Arena against Ashland, the defending Division II national champion.

Coach Kevin McGuff said that senior forward Alexa Hart and junior forward Makayla Waterman are uncertain for the game because of nagging injuries. Both players sat out Thursday’s practice, with Hart on a knee scooter with a walking boot on her right foot.

The Buckeyes’ forward depth would take a serious hit if both were unable to play. Stephanie Mavunga and Chelsea Mitchell would be the remaining forwards on scholarship, meaning freshman walk-on Savitha Jayaraman from Olentangy Liberty would be in line for significant minutes. Six-foot guard Sierra Calhoun could slide down and occupy forward minutes in a pinch.
