Joey King Signs Tender to Play at Minnesota
The Eagan, Minn. Native Returns to Gold Country After One Season at Drake
June 18, 2013
The Minnesota men’s basketball program announced today that forward Joey King has officially signed a tender to play for the Gophers.
King joins previously signed players Deandre Mathieu, Daquein McNeil and Mailk Smith as part of head coach Richard Pitino’s inaugural recruiting class at Minnesota.
“Joey showed last season that he is an inside player that can also step out and hit the three-point shot,” said Pitino. “We want to play an up-tempo style of basketball so to have a versatile player with his size is going to be a luxury.”
King, a native of Eagan, Minn., comes to the University of Minnesota after playing his freshman season at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He played in all 32 of the Bulldogs’ games last season and was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team after averaging 6.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
The Eastview High School graduate shot .428 (74-173) from the field overall and .347 (33-95) from behind the arc for the season. He contributed 10 double-figure scoring games, including a season-high 21 points against Xavier and Missouri State.
King averaged 23.9 points and six rebounds per game as a senior at Eastview in 2011-12. He scored in double figures in 26 of 29 games to lead Lightning to a 28-2 record and a berth in the Minnesota state AAAA basketball tournament.
