Here is a thread to share your travel plans, best hotels, bars and restaurants in Detroit; tailgating plans and more.

Do yourselves a favor and go on a cruise or something instead.

I relocated to Wyandotte, MI, which is 20 minutes south of Detroit 18 months ago. I'll have a list of places to stay, eat, and drink up later this evening and add to it as I think of more. Detroit is a much nicer town than it's given credit for, and I strongly encourage everyone to make the trip out. Ann Arbor is a 25 minute drive to Detroit and a great town to stay in as well. Ford Field is also surprisingly nice for an indoor stadium.

does anyone know what the ticket allotment is for us?

Love your website btw.

We can look at it as being next season's first cup cake.

I have family in Detroit. The city is improving rapidly but still has a lot of depressing areas. Down by the stadium area, I recommend Chris Chelios' chili bar (Cheli's Chili). Also, for a quick meal and Detroit flavor, make sure you get a coney dog. American Coney downtown is a fun place. Their rivals store is right next door. Hotel choices are increasing in the city. Motown Museum is fun for a little history.

As expected, UofM AA comes out with a complete garbage of a package. Saw the price- $430 and thought well that's not terrible to fly to Detroit and stay one night/game ticket. Then I see doesn't include travel. Par for the course.

Here are a few recommendations for hotels, food, drink, etc...

Any of the major brand hotels you'll find in MPLS are also in Detroit, but will probably be expensive. The Greektown area is kind of fun with a number of popular bars/restaurants if you can book something there, not to mention the Greektown Casino. If you're on a budget, stay in Southgate, which is a 15 minute drive from downtown. The Comfort Suites is probably the best out of the half dozen hotels at the intersection of Hwy 75 and Northline. They also offer a shuttle if you've got a group. Arrange it in advance. As I said earlier, Ann Arbor is a 25 minute drive and a fun town to eat and drink in. I've not stayed there, but it's probably cheaper than downtown Detroit. Out of the 3 options, Southgate will be the least expensive, and there are a number of eating and drinking options not far away. The Bierkeller in Taylor is less than a mile away and is outstanding for food/drink. A ton of local MI beers, which are fantastic.

For drinking/eating options, my town of Wyandotte is 10 minutes from the Southgate hotels. There are a ton of outstanding local pubs with good bar food. If you plan on this and want specific places, let me know and I'll post a long list of them. The Corktown area near downtown on Michigan Ave is an outstanding area to eat and drink, mostly drink. Really strong drinks. It's pretty similar to Nordeast in the type of bar and drink that you can expect. Casey's and the Corktown Tavern are my personal favorites. Jimmy Doom, local actor, bartends at the Corktown and pours a wicked strong drink. Stay on Michigan Ave and head downtown from Casey's and you'll be loaded by the time you hit Ford Field. Slow's BBQ in Corktown is outstanding for food. Downtown Detroit has a plethora of eating and drinking options. My favorite is the Bucharest Grill, which is a 5 minute walk from Ford Field (and 5 minutes from a ton of tailgate parking. The best sandwich on the face of the earth is the Bucharest Schwarma. The Park Bar and Cheli's are nearby. The Detroit Beer Company has great beer and food, and is a 10 minute walk from the Stadium. All the casinos have great buffets with Motor City being the best. The Atwater in the Park brewery in Gross Pointe Park is outstanding, although the drive from Detroit is like a long drive down West Broadway in North Minneapolis. Hopcat, and the Heidleberg are my favorite watering holes in Ann Arbor, and the Grizzly Peak Brewery is a must stop as well.

An excursion to nearby Windsor, Canada is a good time and a few minute drive over the Ambassador Bridge. The Canadian Club distillery is a must stop just a few minutes north of town. The tours and tastings at the end are outstanding.

If anyone has any specific questions, please post here and I'll answer as soon as possible.

Thanks, Shawn

What jersey are you going to wear to the game?

Thanks for all your suggestions Gopherdroppings -

I'm attending and staying about 7 blocks from Ford Field. I am pretty familiar with the Detroit sports complex area (from my many excursions to Comerica over the past several years - I'm a Tigers fan), and your suggestions are spot on IMO. The one place I haven't hit up was Bucarest Grill, which I'm going to make sure I get to this time around, based on your take (the smell from that place is always fantastic).

We spent a long weekend last summer in Detroit watching the Twins and had a great time. The Layfayette Coney Island next to the Westin is open until 3am and it was a fun post bar place.
The Westin is very central to the stadium and it is a good spot.
There are couple good bars in the Midtown area/Cass Coridor-Bronx Bar is a little like Grumpys.
The Detroit Institute of Arts is excellent as well.
Close to the Westin and behind the Fox Theatre is a speakeasy supper club that blew us away is cliffbells.com
Beautiful place with great drinks, great ambience, and good food.
Over in Corktown you will find a good BBQ place and you can see where Tiger field used to be.

Chicken shawarma. That is all.

For those interested, I booked on American Airlines to Detroit for $162 out and then on Southwest Airlines back for $167.

Has anyone talked to Creative Charters yet? They have a tentative itinerary but no pricing...

It's been updated recently, but $500 a person. Which isn't bad considering it includes direct flight and hotel.

Just got a follow-up email from CC, and that is correct $499 dbl occupancy and includes direct flight, hotel and ground transportation.

Thanks. Not a bad deal at all.

Anyway see the Lions ticket for Sunday vs 49ers along with Gopher game, combo price 90 dollars. Not bad at all for 2 tickets total. Also, anyone want to carpool from Chicago area to Detroit?

For those of us who go to bowl games on our own, we need to know the team hotel so we can stay somewhere affordable nearby and still hangout near the team. What's the team hotel?

Holereader lives in Detroit and has the following insights. While Shawn from Wyandotte provides reasonable options I would categorically exclude Windsor NFW - you'd need your passport anyway - Holereader recommends Greektown area post game - several good bars within walking distance. If you want your reliable chains there are Punchbowl and BW3. If you want to rub elbows there is Club Steel (formerly Bat Lounge), The Detroiter, Old Shillelagh (Irish Pub - Holereader was asked to leave said establishment but for good reason so I would not hold that against them - Holereader believes that he may be allowed back in for bowl game - his ban as best he knows is for Lions games only) There is also Sweetwaters which has excellent wings and other food. After all this consider the casino and double your money!! If you prefer to go deep (say 2:00 am or later) holereader recommends Bert's - a very eclectic jazz club in what is called eastern market (you will need a cab but only 10 mins at most) you could walk but you might really be rubbing elbows. If you go to Bert's you will really be rubbing elbows. Back toward camps martius (end of woorward) is Grand Trunk a craft brew pub with excellent selection of craft beers. Also for your viewing pleasure is the 24 Grille in the Westin (holereader likes the waitresses here - he believes them to be in the hot category)

Lastly - easy pregame is a bar called the El Wood - it is directly across the street from Ford Field and has plenty of room if they let you leak into adjacent parking ramp. Holereader enjoys the El Wood for its low hassle factor and good pregame atmoshpere

Chelios is also close but holereader disapproves since they are greedy and may require a cover $20 and the bouncers are in the tool category

Holereader was not planning on attending but after writing this post is now stoked and will alter his Holiday itinerary
