***OFFICIAL PURDUE AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

That's great and all but when you're making the same mistakes over and over and can't adapt... you're not a great coach. Everyone and their dog could see what was slowly happening at the end of the game, I know I wasn't the only one... and we got lucky / bailed out.

Fleck has had 15 games at Minnesota where the margin was 7 points or less.
He is 10-5 in those games.

Three of those losses were in 2017 when I forget who was QB.
Last year vs Iowa where we fell down early and almost came back. Dropped pass.
Then this year vs Maryland.

He has 5 losses by a "close" margin, and maybe one or two you can blame on playcalling costing us the win.

My point is, these type of calls don't matter that much in most games. Most games you are substantially better because overall you played better or had better talent or didn't turnover the ball.

Very seldom is it a couple play calls.
And in close games, PJ wins twice as often as he loses.

I will never forget an infamous ending against Purdue in those days. It was overtime and a Purdue receiver caught the ball out of the back of the endzone. The weird markings confused the ref. There was no doubt he was out of bounds but no replay back then. As I walked out of the Dome stomping mad that stupid Purdue train was blaring its horn. Join the club, Purdue. We've all been there.

M
It was actually the Gopher receiver that caught the ball in bounds but was called out of bounds in OT that cost the Gophers the game. I get your point though!

That's how we remember it too. Took a couple of cousins with us to the game. It was their first College Football game but they were big Vikings fans. At the stadium and sitting out on the Deck after I was still made at that official. On the Deck I mentioned that he was so clear that his foot came down in bounds and that's all you need in College.

They were quiet and then asked "You only need one foot in bounds? We thought that meant he was clearly out!" :D

Yeah, that's right. The back of the endzone was marked with a white line but the Gold or Maroon coloring, whichever, didn't reach all the way back to the line.

I think that was also the game where they put 1 second back on the clock that gave Purdue the chance to kick a field goal that sent it to overtime. The wasn't a clear missed call but questionable.

This game will be decided by a turnover.

Thanks to the officials. We had a chance. at the end. And then Plummer finally threw up a high floater right to Aune after being in a zone all night.

Anyone complaining about not getting home cooking from the officials need to stop. We got at least three replays in our favor plus the PI which usually is not called.

The football Gods were with us tonight.

Maybe not next week, but if Potts remains out maybe give Williamson or the true F RB some touches to spell Mo? I like Wiley when gets rolling, but his repertoire is pretty limited.

The receiver did stick his arm out and give the DB a baby push in the sternum, but not enough for a call. It was BS, but I did see an angle where there was contact.

Baby push, that is what I put out there..

Rotten Call, guy caught the ball.. BS ALL AROUND..

Great NU, Johnson Field Play, .. Purdue guy got screwed

Both true. Though on that long completion to get down in FG range there was clear holding call that was ignored. How do I remember? Because on the replay board at the Dome when they replayed it you couldn't see the lineman who held. Why? Because the Gopher Defender's uniform was stretched off the screen!

Yes, the marginal Offensive PI at the end was a gift. However, that marginal call only offset the 100% total phantom PI against the Gophs earlier in the game (video proves it). Regarding the replays, I only recall 2 of them, but both were clear calls.

Do you feel bad for Brohm as a Gopher fan? I don't. Not one bit.
Feel bad for him? Probably not, but I do like Brohm. Either way, the ref Gods were on our side tonight so to complain about the ref'ing after that seems quite silly.

Oh, the details we never forget. People often roll their eyes when I bring up the gory details of Gopher football games long past.

Yes, understood.. but look... if you were a coach. Knowing your defense is pretty bad, and the best thing you have on the team is the offense. Do you limit your offense and just rely on your defense? Isn't this the most basic part of being a coach? Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your team and using that to win games? The 4th quarter Fleck and whoever was calling the plays, went into total shut down only to rely on the defense... and almost lost. Got some lucky calls to hold on. And I guess I can't tell if we would have won or not, but I'm willing to bet if we played more aggressive at Maryland, we win that game. Iowa, it was close until the second half, but it was the same predictable play calling against the best run defense in the b10. This 4th quarter play calling was the worst I had ever seen, only got bailed out by how bad Purdue was also.

Is it only me or does it seem that our DEF plays a little better, challenges more, gets fooled less, when P Howard and C Swenson are out there? Both are tough as boiled owls, pretty fast, and not mistake prone.

I didn't like the play calling the last two drives.

My point is calling a coach who is excelling everywhere else and calling him a bad coach because of play calling is like calling your companies best salesperson a bad salesperson because she gets her expense reports in a day late.

It's like saying a sports car sucks because the gas mileage isn't good.

It's like saying a Priest is bad because the wine at communion is a rail-wine.

It's like saying a Gopherhole poster isn't good because of their choice of avatar.

It's great that PJ has brought our levels of expectations to the point where we now feel guilty about wins.

It's also great PJ has brought our level of expectations to the point where we need to apologize for favorable ref calls.

It's easy to make a call from the couch isn't it? But if you've ever been in the field you make the call because you see it. If a player gains an unfair advantage with a subtle push you make the call whether it's the first play of the game or the last play..

The "gory details of Gopher football games long past" are exactly why I don't feel even one little iota of sympathy for Brohm and Purdue. The football gods still owe the Gophs a huge pile of payback chits.

I get it but what I am pointing out, eventually leads to wins and losses, which is what will ultimately determine if he a good coach or not... so far this year, it's not going good. Probably could have but didn't win at Maryland, and almost lost this last game. If he keeps relying on this terrible defense, and keeps the offense predictable, we will not win very many games.

Brohm held back, that was the worst call have seen to 40 years.
Worse than on the previous drive that went against us? You can't call pass interference on an unscathed le ball and Plummer's pass barely cleared the LOS.
Can we maybe give the win back to Purdue? really?

We did screw them

Is this a joke? "We" didnt screw anybody

When a team is good, they win most of their games by wide margins.
Then a few games are decided by small margins.
In those games, critical fans will point out the bad play calls.

No one is criticizing the 4th and 8 call to CAB.
