***OFFICIAL POSTGAME THREAD: MINNESOTA 29 - NW 12

Not sure why you lead with the bolded...I completely understand the math and how football scoring works, but thanks I guess.

It is not typical to go for the 2 first, because if you fail, you are still down two scores. Hello.

Since you get math you realize if you miss the 2 when attempted (whether on the first or the second TD) you are still down, right? I have indeed seen the team go for 2 on the first TD more often than 1 in that scenario and have always attributed it to the team knowing sooner whether they need just 1 more or 2 more scores - might change how they play the rest of the game.

Fitzgerald call the Gophers unsportsmanlike on the post game int. Big baby. He loves to point to the their fans when they win. Glad we didn't see it tonight

I loved when the jackass called timeout with 0 chance of winning the game and Leidner f'in runs one more in for a TD. The 4th and 1 in the 4th quarter was retarded as well. If I was a NW fan I'd be pretty disappointed. I was shocked at those decisions and to be honest I was surprised when he went for the 45 yard FG early in the game. That's a long kick in those conditions.

How about we agree to disagree? Great football minds are allowed to do that.

That is classic Pat Fitzgerald crap right there. It was great.

Sure. I'm not even sure I disagree with you. My only point is I don't think what Fitz did was a-typical.

I didn't think so either. They need the two-point conversion either way. Changes the way they play the remainder of the game....and how aggressive they need to be.

If you haven't seen the quote, Fitzgerald was asked about the targeting penalty during the post-game interview, and his comment was "That's a good question for Tracy Claeys. It's his team."

Joe C's game story said that Fitzgerald was yelling at the Gopher coaches after the play, and the Gopher Coaches were yelling back.

Seriously? What did he say? Besides the targeting call (which didn't look intentional), what else did MN do? I've never heard another team say that about the Gophers. Definitely does sound like whining. I've lost a little respect for Fitz.

He was referring specifically to the hit by Duke. We were just far more physical today. Fun to see. And yes, I lost respect for Fitz today. Not as much though as when he touted Brewster.

Fitz had multiple questionable calls yesterday. If TC had made half the questionable calls Fitz made people would be calling for his head and would be irate.

I watch all games by stream. At the end of today's game, the stream showed some of the NU players also huddled with ours in prayer. is this common?

That happens in most games across the country. Players from both teams of faith get together at midfield for a quick prayer of thanks.

Thanks for the replies. Nice to see that. My last post game players viewing was the badgers incident, hence the curiosity.

One thing I liked seeing was plenty of formations with Smith and Brooks both on the field at the same time. That's something Claeys has talked about but I hadn't seen it much before. It wasn't always successful but it opens up some opportunities to get the ball to them in space.

Can someone who watched the game at home, and likely had the luxury of additional replays of the call on the 4th down play where the officials 1st down spot was disputed but upheld?

Live from the stands, and with the couple of replays on the big screen it seemed quite clear that the receiver was stopped 1/2 to 1 yard short of the first down. It could have been a game changing drive for NW and the spot seemed ludicrous.

It was very obviously short by about 10-12 inches. Courtesy of slo-mo replay. Not sure what's going on with the spots. OTOH we've been the beneficiary of poor spots so...I'd still like to see a more fair game from the officials. Get it right. Literally 20 seconds by the replay official is all it takes.

I recall seeing the exchange on the field, after the game, between Fitzgerald and Claeys and thinking, man that was really brief. Claeys was kind of left standing there like -- what the heck just happened. Guess we now know why. Pretty classless of Fitzgerald.

Fitz probably doesn't have much respect for Claeys to this point and the targeting call allowed him to express it. Very different people.

What? Are you suggesting that Fitz came into the game with some sort of chip on his shoulder regarding Claeys. And the targeting call, conveniently, allowed him to express it?

Fitz is a high achiever, physically imposing, physically fit former All-American Alpha-male. Claeys is a morbidly obese quiet bookish-type that lacks alpha characteristics. Yes, Fitz probably disrespects him and the targeting on his best player confirmed Fitz' bias that he can't keep his team in line because he is a weak leader.

And yet the team coached by Claeys won the game? How is this even possible. Hope the Fitz man-crush is still intact.

I never said I agreed with it. Fitz bothers me in a lot of ways but he has done some good things with his teams over the years.

You forgot to add great cook, fantastic sense of humor, talented poet and great lover :)

You were ahead of me. I've never really respected him. I think the guy is a bona fide jackass.

Did Carr leave with upper body or thigh injury? I thought they reported a thigh injury.

Fitzgerald was probably mad at himself for going for Two instead of one multiple times and not taking 3 on 4th and one when down 9. Some dumb decisions.

No offense, but we're not in any position to call out other coaches for dumb decisions.

Souhan fit, or just physically fit?

While Pat Fitzgerald has had some good season at Northwestern, I personally think he is vastly overrated. Today proves that point IMO.

What in the heck was he doing going for 2 down 15? If you fail, you are now down two scores...as we all know, they failed. He then compounded that mistake later in the 4th quarter by passing on a short field goal attempt down 9 points (15-6). He needed 2 scores to win the game at that point. Why pass up a short-ish FG attempt and risk a 4th down play?

All of this happened in the last 17 minutes of the game. It was baffling. I was laughing.

Not kicking the FG was moronic. Fitz was terrible yesterday in more ways than one.
