Well this atrocious outing pretty much guarantees we'll be finishing 11th or worse in league play for the 5th time in Pitino's 8 seasons.
 



Pitino got 4 free years here. He should of been fired that long ago. I think Coyle was focused on Fleck and then Pitino won 1 tourney game and Coyle was able to keep him, then the virus hit. Now it’s finally over because there is no way it can’t be.

Big talkers on here but no one will put their money where their mouth is. I told writer and Stocker08 I would bet them every game and got crickets...since then 1-3 straight up, 0-4 vs the spread.

I don't feel good for Northwestern, because they played bad, too...except maybe at the end, at crunch time.
 

I think tonight is the proverbial nail in the coffin. His conference winning % is under 35% over 8 seasons. Doesn't recruit the state well. No reason to keep him. None.

I do want to say that I supported Pitino. I still hope they win every game. I just think its time.

He doesn’t recruit anywhere well. You can’t have a conference winning percentage of 35% and still say he recruits well. Tells me he recruits mid major players well cause that’s who they play in the non conference. Then when the rubber meets the road the players simply are not good enough in the big ten.

He basically has Brad Davisons stats if you evened out the minutes. Slightly better scorer. Lesser at everything else. Much less of a dbag.
Cool thing about sports is age doesn’t matter. He doesn’t get bonus points for being a freshman. More time to develop, but more guys coming in every year who are better than him.
I like mini Mash but let’s not lie to ourselves about what he is.

I didn’t say he recruits well. I made a point about one of his major flaws on why he should be fired. There are plenty I didn’t name. Currently feeding the baby so don’t want to make an exhaustive list. Have work tomorrow and stuff.

I don’t disagree with you but if there is a change I doubt it happens before the end of the season.

Coyle should be working his shortlist and back channels to see where the interest in the job is and who is a realistic get.

Only thing that could still save Pitino is the pandemic and if Coyle views the injuries as too much to overcome and Pitino deserves another year. If that happens going to tough for this fan base to get on board with the decision.

This team was average at best when fully healthy......The B10 record alone should get him fired.....Covid or not the buyout is tiny and should not be a factor.

You have to give Coyle some credit. His coaching moves have been decisive and planned when he makes them. Whalen, Fleck, Motzko. All came together quickly. There isn’t a 3 week moratorium and then a committee followed by a firm. If Pitino is fired a replacement will be named quickly.
I also don’t think this season can be blamed on injuries. At all. He had a healthy roster for almost the entire year.

Did you also notice, when the Gophers attempted to get back in it in the 2nd half, their coach called timeouts to kill the flow the Gophers were getting. Have you ever seen Pitino do that when the other team is in a groove? he just stands back and watches until a TV timeout happens.

Coaching... reading the board today, in some threads people were saying he really isn't that bad of a coach. I truly have not seen it. He got the job due to his last name, pure and simple.

I was telling my dad on the phone today, I was thinking the Gophers would squeak into the tourney as they did 2 years ago and save his job again.

I can lay that to rest at least. Hate to see the season be over AND the rebuilding to start BUT needs to happen, and ASAP.

Comically bad. There was a sequence that was airball, missed layup on the other end, turnover, 2 on 1 ending in a turnover, turnover. Seen better quality from the little chippers or whatever the kids at halftime are called.
 

Meanwhile...Brian Dutcher has his team at 18-4 and a nine game winning streak.
 


I'm feeling frustrated with the state of the program as it stands, so going to take this as an opportunity air things out. Pardon me if I'm a bit blunt. Just calling it how I see it.

1) Ihnen may have a promising game once in a blue moon, but it's not going to work out for him here. He's shooting a putrid 20% from 3 (as a 3PT specialist), can barely dribble the ball, and is half way through his career without any inclination he's progressing. He, along with 2-3 others on this roster would be best served transferring to a mid-major / low-major school.

2) Both Gach is a waste of a scholarship.

3) Curry should move on from bball after this season. I'm very appreciative of his freshman year and his fight to return from injuries, but it seems obvious it's time for him to start a new journey.

4) We already know Pitino's as good as gone (unless Coyle is crazy). But here's an example of how awful he is as a coach. We are the worst 3PT shooting team in the B1G by a large margin and I believe we are 2nd in the conference in 3PT attempts per game / almost tied for 1st. He has had many opportunities to put his foot down there and refuses. He demands zero accountability, and has no real offense set he runs. Has he ever played basketball at any competitive level by the way??

I'll end on a positive.... Mashburn is already very dynamic as a freshman, and there is often a big leap from freshman to sophomore year. If he sticks around, he can be outstanding as an upperclassmen. Also, our new coach could really inject some new energy into the program and bring in respectable recruits. Here's to better days ahead!
