Last year's team shot 66.4% from the line which ranked 332nd in D1. This year's team is at 65.0% through six games. Good games at the line aren't following good games. The coaches are obviously trying to teach better FT shooting techniques and habits. However, it's not working so far.
 

Expectations were high with Niko on the Gopher sideline. Having a coach who made the NCAA's and actually won a game is foreign to Gopher fans and must automatically equate to a good Gopher team.

Niko must recruit at the BIG level which he failed to do his first season. Worse than what Ben brought in. Thus far its been a big failure and the BIG season is just around the corner.

To be fair, I actually like what Niko brought in a little better than Ben's first year talent.

Ben had Battle and Willis and little else. Niko has Tyson who I prefer to Battle so far (Tyson's efficiency has been incredible). We have no one to compare to Willis but the rest of the roster is an upgrade over Ben's. JCJ/ Asuma/Reynolds/Willis > Stephens/Sutherlin/Loewe/Thompson. I am worried about this squad but still think we will win more than the 4 conference games Ben won that year.

Next year, Niko will have to bring a big upgrade in talent. We have a nice core who can return and they will get better in this system.
 

Liked Durkin in the last game, his shots have been right on the rim all season they just haven't gone in. Hopefully the couple he made gets his confidence back and they start to fall. He looks like a shooter and could be a second major scoring threat.
 


That's lazy. Nobody's asking for Ben to come back.

What some of us are saying is that there are some initial benchmarks that are or should be controllable that look like JJ McCarthy trying to hit a receiver in stride. Not one decent preseason home game for the folks that pay the bills. A team that can hit an average number of free throws. No close home games against hyphenated or directional schools. Don't be overwhelmed on a neutral court by a school with two and a half good players.
 

Of the guys with at least 20 FT attempts so far, two are shooting around their career percentage (Crocker & Tyson) and three are well below (Willis, Reynolds and Vaihola). If they all just shot their career averages, we'd be about a 75% shooting team.

They weren't overwhelmed. It was a tie game with 8 minutes left. If they'd shot 75% on free throws they may well have won the game.

USF is a bubble team and may well make the NCAAs. The Gophers didn't play great, but it wasn't as bad as you're making it out to be. The Chicago State game was much uglier.

The fact that we were that close in an ugly can show that we are a better team. We legit beat ourselves with the free throws. I really liked what I saw from Langston Reynolds. Cade Tyson was held in check for the most part, limiting our best 3 point shooter, but Reynolds picked up the slack. We got out and ran a bit. I keep forgetting that Omot is still out. Vaihola being out hurt our rebounding. I think we are a better team than what we've shown the last underwhelming games. Let's trust the process. Let's trust Niko.

Believe me, I'd LOVE to be wrong.

I realize most here are forced to pretend it's looking good, since most here have a lot invested in Niko.
 



So short of hiring coach k, scheduling duke unc texas tech uconn and winning every game by 40 what were we supposed to do?

Listen go look, I'm as critical as anyone on the coaches. Give it some time. The green Bay game was awful, they just beat UMass and iona last two games. I'm not telling you we are set and are world beaters but come on, just show the tiniest bit of patience. It hasn't been amazing out of the gate but we hired a proven coach, he deserves a little bit of grace.

Wrong conference. WCC with Gonzaga, St. Marys, and Santa Clara. I guess they're second tier because Gonzaga and St. Marys are the top tier but they're likely top 4 anyway in that conference.

Yes, he does. It's year 1. He gets a free pass. The worst that can happen is another losing season. Since we've had losing seasons in 7 of the past 10 years, that's nothing that hasn't been seen before.

This isn't specific to the game but saw Niko schmoozing T Denny before the game and he had on Gopher gear. Do we have any idea if he gives some? None? A lot? To NIL. I know at one point he was irritated about the business school name but wasn't sure if that has changed or not. Need a massive $$ donor like him to really get us moving.
