***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA VS NEBRASKA-OMAHA IN-GAME THREAD***

Joey really can't guard on the perimeter. Real weakness but he's been big on offense. Besides last TO Carlos has played under control.

Good win for our young guys. We could have easily lost pace with their up tempo style of play, but we stayed with them every step of the way. Lots of stuff to work on though. Most notably free throw shooting and rebounding.

Almost another patented Minnesota meltdown. Fun game to watch, but obviously a lot to be concerned about.

Boys gotta work on expanding their neck size. Good to win a close one...even if it shouldn't have been that close.

+1. Brutal, brutal FT shooting at the end. Mason has to get better or it'll cost us multiple games.

Exactly. Hasn't he been pretty solid on crucial FT in the past? That was awful.

Very, very lucky that we hit 55% from 3pt range.

If you are bored I would check out Ryan James putting Myron in his place on Twitter for suggesting that Pitino isn't handling Morris's playing time adequately. I'm not a huge James follower but I love that he challenges the stribs perpetual second guessing negativity with basketball knowledge.

He had been 94% on the season before his first miss down the stretch today where it went almost all the way down and spun out. He did miss some crucial ones last year but he had been pretty money this year.

Really like the progress Bakary is making. With Murphy it's only a matter of time and him knowing he belongs. Looks timid at times. I thought this was one of Morris' best games as a Gopher. Forced nothing and played with poise and I've been very critical of Carlos. Typical game from Joey. Light out from 3 and solid on offense but poor on defensive end. Don't see that changing so will have to live with it. Finally, Mason is easily our most consistent player on both ends once again. Would like him to hit his FTs at the end but he's definitely our leader.

Team D still a work in progress. Our biggest weakness. Not shocking.

Overall a good win. Think I saw growth with our team. Omaha has some real talented kids.

No. I recall some key misses last year too. At this point I'd rather have Dorsey at PG in the final minutes.

That's Marcus Fuller, not Myron. He works for the Pioneer Press, not the Star Tribune. Myron is/was a negative @ss about the Gophers and a terrible and ignorant writer. Marcus hasn't been, and is 10x better at his job. Other than that, spot on.

Nice to pull through with a win but a lot of stuff to work on. Really liked the way the freshmen that got a lot of minutes played tonight and you can see them getting better game by game. McBrayer came in and replaced Morris early after a terrible start from Morris and made a big difference. He finally made a jumper, had a few assists, and played real solid d. Hope he can improve from the foul line and finishing at the rim which seemed to be a problem for pretty much everyone on the Gophers today. Dorsey played pretty good d and got into the lane almost at will but missed a couple layups and a few floaters that hopefully he will start to knock down. Murphy might have been the MVP today, he may be our only physical presence inside and is easily our best rebounder. The key for him is to continue to get better at playing without fouling so he can stay on the court. Also thought Konate played well on the offensive end but a few times he could have been more patient at the rim and instead rushed them and missed it. We really need him to take a step or two forward on the defensive end though. Solid games from Mason, King, and Buggs. Gilbert and Diedhiou only played a little bit and neither one made much of an impact good or bad. Morris was horrible in the 1st half and didn't look like there was much effort from the tip but played much better in the 2nd half until the late turnover. Free throw shooting was pretty good for most of the game and then suddenly became horrible down the stretch got to be able to make free throws in the clutch.

Startribune having basketball knowledge --- hahaha what a joke.

Murphy was an absolute stud-muffin in this afternoons game.

I posted this in the Louisiana Monroe game thread. Not sure how I ended up there, but I felt I should put my comment in the right home.

Murphy was the difference between winning and losing that game. He was the only guy out there consistently playing defense and rebounding. By the time he's an upperclassman, he'll be unstoppable.

Hahaha whoops. I should have done some fact checking. Either way he has the same negative vibe as the rest of the TC media whenever I read. Fuller has access to a wide range of fans who are engaged at different levels, and it's easy for him to question Pitino's coaching decisions and paint him as a subpar coach, but it was nice to see someone reputable tell Fuller he was wrong in real time.

Real question: is Nebraska Omaha a better looking team than Texas Tech? Their energy sure made it feel
That way for me.

Agreed on Murphy. He stood his ground and played tough.

For clarity, howeda pointed out that it was Marcus Fuller from the pioneer press, and not Myron. I got the M's mice up and I always assume poor basketball coverage comes from the strib.

Murphy reminds me of Justise Winslow - well, just a little bit. He could become a really good player down the road.

There's nothing to do but throw the frosh out there and hope for the best. We're never going to win without them so they just have to have the chances every game to get up to speed.
Murphy is setting the pace for them. He's rather quietly making a splash. Dorsey isn't going to miss his shots forever, and McBrayer is going to be solid support. We needed those 2 to help out Mason as they all had UNO's lightening quick PG to contend with.

They're going to be...interesting...

Nice game by Murphy.

Just to extrapolate some box score numbers for minutes played:

Murphy played only 16 minutes - If he had played 36 minutes (the most minutes played by a player in the game) he would have had 31 points and 13 rebounds. {and 9 fouls}

By the same measure Jake White would have had 46 points. {and 10 fouls}

+++ And Jay Joo would have had 36 points - 36 rebounds and 18 blocks. :cool:

For once I thought Gas looked like he had a future on this team. He jumped out immediately. The dude has a nice bucket, 2 rebounds, and a very nice block in 2 minutes. What more can you ask for in that time?

Free throws at the end made me cringe. I liked how they fought back to win and they grew and learned from today. Even though it is frustrating to watch them struggle so early a win is still a win. Be prepared for a lot of tough frustrating games in the big ten and hopefully some surprises too when the threes are falling.
