Finally a conference matchup between the program John Wooden wanted to coach for vs his backup program he settled on.

The last two times the Gophers played UCLA were both on March 22 (2013 and 1997), both times the Gophers ended the Bruins season in the NCAA Tournament!

Like Fleck, Gophers now have a chance to sweep LA!

GET ‘ER DONE JOHNSON!!!!!!!!!!!

Who will ever forget John Thomas(?) dancing with Al McGuire after the ‘97 win? McGuire loved Clem and Thomas/James/Lewis dominating in the paint.
I remember that vividly. I’m almost 75 years old. A diehard Gopher BB fan all my life. I was in San Antonio in 1997 for the Sweet 16. That was the pinnacle. We had reached the mountain top. Unfortunately all downhill from there. But nonetheless a wonderful memory!

Latest regular season B1G tip-off time in Gopher history?
No, we had back to back 9:30 tips in that Cali/Thanksgiving tourney a couple of years back.

Barely beat Cal Baptist in the first game and got smoked by UNLV in the 2nd.

IIRC, it was Miles Tarver😃

Couldn’t locate the video but is mentioned in an article regarding his exploits, below-

Honoring this former Golden Gopher is long overdue. You may know him best from his smooth dance moves shared with Al McGuire after the Gophers took down UCLA earning a berth to the Final Four in 1997. I knew him best for his cringe-inducing mid-range jumper and his ham-fisted rebounds. Still, I loved the guy. He was sort of our version of Brian Cardinal (everyones favorite actress from Purdue). Oakand, California's own Miles Tarver. The man, the myth, the moustache.

I was at both in person. A lot earlier on the west coast.

I think post was referring to conference games, though.

That game against UCLA I think is my #1 all time sports memory. Being from MN we don't actually win anything so that game to me as a kid felt like a championship. It validated the whole year, we slayed a blue blood! I watch that game full through about once a year.

It made Steve Lavin cry, too. I thought he was kind of a wuss then, but really grew to like him on the TV circuit. Insightful and good quips demonstrating he isn’t a one dimensional jock guy.

Ahh, you guys know the drill with the NCAA. It never happened! We are after all not Kansas or North Carolina.

I vaguely recall a lot of partying in San Antonio after the UCLA game though. A lot of Shiner Bock was consumed. But........ never happened......

My favorite memory as a life long Gopher fan. Had a great time in San Antonio. Tons of Gopher Fans. Overtime win vs. Clemson. Michele Tafoya on CBS. Pepfest at the hotel. Streets blocked off as what seemed like 10,000+ fans walking to Alamo Dome. Eric Harris with bum shoulder warming up and fans cheering louder and louder as he made shot after shot. Winning the game and watching Clem cut down the net. Unfortunately our flight didn't get back in time to make it to the Barn for the impromptu pepfest.

If they win tonight.... this is not what a lot of people want to hear....Ben becomes a better than 50-50 bet to keep his job. I'm ready to move on, but I want the win! Go Gophers!
I'm sure there's people who want losses so they can justify Ben leaving when the whole point of being a fan is enjoying the team. I want this team to be successful, Ben or no Ben. If we win tonight, his odds of staying definitely increase.

Do I need to convince my wife that we need to keep Peacock for another month or is it on BTN?

After seeing Lavin cry, would love nothing more than to see an unpopular Cronin meltdown blaming everyone else vs UCLA.

Stripping UCLA of their pompous swagger while erasing that smug grin from Toby Bailey's face was very satisfying for this Gopher fan.

You may be right but I really don’t think so. I believe, without evidence, that the decision has already been made. A win tonight doesn’t get us to the tournament. There is a full body of work over four years that doesn’t scream success. Low probability of his return. Not much on the roster returning.

Nope. Coyle expects Ncaa tournament bid or nothing at all. It's a zero percent chance that Ben Johnson is coaching the Gophers next year if this squad misses the NCAA tournament. Therefore, go Gophers. Win tonight, cause Ben isn't coaching here next season.

Agree with you. The 4 year body of work leaves alot to be desired, to say the least. The odds of him returning increase after each win, but those odds are still prominently low. If we somehow make the tournament via an NC State type of run then he still has a chance to return. But I'm not counting on it.
