***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT OHIO STATE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I think if it were goaltending at the end of regulation players would have been going mental.

The replays didn’t have a great view of it.

This team is obviously not built for OT. Almost guaranteed one of our iron 5 will foul out.

Another game where the depth cost us. With big Rob’s 7 boards per game we probably win by 7.

It’s a really bittersweet feeling knowing the program in a good place long term, but also seeing if we had our full squad we’d be projected as about a 9 seed at the moment.
To your point about the missing Rob rebounds, a key (maybe the key) to the “Iron Five” winning the 1971-1972 Big Ten title was Jim Brewer’s rebounding. Offensive rebounds negating two/three stops a game is a difference if not the difference between winning and losing.

This is a team that I so badly want for them to be rewarded for their effort. They are very well coached and don't beat themselves. Every team that they face knows that they are in for a fight. It makes me proud to be a Gopher fan. I don't know when the last time was that I felt so happy to be cheering on a Gopher basketball team because they were so fun to watch. Probably, it was under Clem.
Man, a victory over Nebraska would be nice.

Sucks to have to say it, but we aren’t going to win any games, especially in OT if we “only” get 33 minutes out of Tyson.
He also took the fewest shots of the starting five. He keeps passing up open 3s and stopping drives. He cannot play 33 minutes in that game and take 6 shots.

On the goaltending...

He probably gives the ball a nudge just a split-second after it bounces on the rim, at about the exact same time. His hand is definitely there. The ball makes a bounce motion that probably has to be the rim.

I don't know if it's the same rule as in the NBA, but there you can only challenge a goaltending if it is called on the court. You can challenge it to reverse a goaltending call, but can't challenge the lack of a call.

And it was goaltending. LOL

My question is earlier with a couple of minutes left, Tyson drives.....OSU player goes up and grabs the rim (really obvious)...Tyson then keeps driving and hits the basket and gets fouled. Isn't that a technical for grabbing the rim while the ball is in play like that????

I believe the coach's challenge for goaltending can only be used if goaltending is actually called and only in the first 38 minutes of a game.

In the final two minutes, officials can initiate their own review of potential goaltending on shots where goaltending wasn't called on the floor. It appears the officials did not initiate a review of this play at the end of regulation, which is insane. Or, maybe they did review and the braindead TV crew didn't inform us. That is possible. The review would have likely had many more camera angles than the two crappy ones floating around from the live TV broadcast. Although watching both angles, I think it was goaltending.

Maybe I am ignorant but whatvis so good about Asuma, he can't shoot and his ball handling is mediocre at best imo. He does distribute well however

Anyone notice Asuma limping midway through the 2nd half? He kept playing, but I think he may have tweaked his ankle on the defensive end when he was fighting for a rebound.

My view is his hand definitely makes the ball move in a different direction.

Google AI (is not always right):

Based on NCAA basketball rules, if a player shoots the ball, it hits the front of the rim, and a defender touches or nudges it while it is still in the air with a chance of entering the basket, it is likely goaltending.
Here is the breakdown based on NCAA rules:
  • Downward Flight/Possibility: Once a shot is in its downward flight and has a chance to go in, any defender touching it is goaltending.
  • The "Bounce" Situation: When a ball hits the rim, it is often still considered to have a "possibility" of entering the basket as it bounces upward or sits on the rim. If a defender touches the ball while it is in this phase—even a split-second after the initial contact—it is considered to have interrupted a shot with a chance to score.
  • Rim/Cylinder Area: If the defender touches the ball, rim, or net while the ball is on the rim, it is also considered Basket Interference (defensive), which has the same result as goaltending (points are awarded).
Conclusion:
Because the ball is on its downward trajectory after hitting the front of the rim and still has a chance to go in, the defender’s nudge is almost certainly a violation.

I hope this continues in future years, Niko's CSU and Furman teams battles as well, I just hope this isn't a chips are down and we have to take this mindset. I remember Ben's first team had a lot of fight to it but then they went young the next year and never really had that mind set the rest of his tenure

Asuma is a do it all point guard. Had a really nice game yesterday. His 3 point shot is coming along and he's gonna be a really nice player all around for us.

In the 2nd half down the stretch, he was the main reason we were hanging around. Impacting the game defensively and made a big shot or two.

I think if some of the players and/or coaches reacted the refs would have looked at it.

Thought he was timid in the first half and then played inspired in the second half.

The future is bright. Yes losing these games in heartbreakers sucks, but this team competes so hard and gets the best out of the limited personnel we have. We are so well coached and play great team basketball. Niko will acquire a lot more talent in the years to come. The barn is going to be rocking again!

On a positive note, Shinholster is becoming one of our better on-the-ball defenders we have. Over the past two games, on a few defensive plays, he has been able to shut down the opposing teams better players. His quickness and his ability to stay vertical has impressed me.
If we could speed up his development on the offensive side of the ball I think he playing time would increase considerably.

I've noticed this too. And while he's still a bit thinner than other players (which makes sense since he's a freshman)....he doesn't shy away from contact. Like his willingness to be aggressive. Positive signs for the future.

At the very least he can give Reynolds a break from guarding the best perimeter player.

Overall shooting by the team hoas been impresive. I am thinking he is better at tweeking guys shot than most coaches. I always thought that was Bo Ryans stength. May hint at good things to come.

Yes, agreed on this. Just development in general seems to be awesome-a from Niko. Kidding aside, the guy knows how to develop from what I've seen in the past.

Man we are just a few missed shots at the end of regulation away from winning all three of these last games. What a fun team to watch and it gives me so much confidence in what is to come.
Almost a complete roster turnover but these players are already becoming a beloved bunch of Gophers. Never will be Bobby Jackson/Jordan Murphy level for me but so easy to like. I feel just as bad for them as I do for myself when we lose like that.

Back in my hoops coaching days I had a great 3 point shooter who kept passing up open looks. Finally, at a practice I asked each member of the entire squad to raise their hands if they wanted him to shoot when open and stop passing up open looks. The whole team raised their hands. He took off after that.

2.5 assist to turnover ration - 81% free throw shooter - averages over 10 points a game - 3 point shot getting better and will look for his shot - Good rebounder for a guard - leads the team in assists, steals and is second in blocks......and just a sophomore......

I like this haha. Great lesson
