***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT MARYLAND IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Good effort. Maryland has a ton more talent than us, obviously. Well done by the Gophers.
Yes, that was probably the best they’ve played this year against a real opponent. Maryland’s MO is to turn you over, so that stat was as expected - but the Gophs did much better on non-turnover possessions than normal. And a lot of that is about making the FTs like a normal team.

No coach in America will have Femi at PG. No team in American will start Patterson over Asumma. No coach in America will have your second leading scorer sit in the corner and not be part of the offense. No coach in America will sit a 6’10” center on the bench the entire game. My point is this coach has no clue.

Nope it's all NIL's fault

If they didn't have the turnover issue, that zero would finally be a one. It was probably our best Big Ten game played so far
Easily our best game. Not only the turnovers but they missed about 5 lay ins. They put themselves into a position to win against a far more talented team and that is to the credit of players and coach.

And if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle.

That effort allowed MN to move up to #108 on Torvik this morning, which puts them ahead of Washington at #111. Not last!!! Well, analytically not last...

I would agree that it probably was the team's best game in conference (it really has to be either this one or Ohio State). I would say that there were several problems that kept them from winning:

1) The turnover issue

2) The missed short shots. The team shot well on 3s (.389) and at the free throw line (.826) but were terrible on 2s (.389)

3) They still have big problems defending talented players inside. Queen has been a handful for most teams this season but we gave the highly rated freshman his career high to date. Rice did a lot of damage too. Those two players combined for 19 free throw attempts and they made 16 of them.

After getting drubbed on the boards in the first two conference games, the Gophers have been better since. They won the rebounding battle last night against a team with two good big men.

Something the boys are going to have going for them is that a lot of teams will sleepwalk / take us lightly. I'd imagine we'll get at least 1 of those games.

For the life of me I cannot understand why, considering this issue, we don't have Edmunds out there for at least some minutes defending the bigs. Frank absolutely cannot and Garcia is a foul machine when he tries to guard.

1. As I said prior to the game, MD is going to turn you over - you just need to accept that and limit the damage. That came out about as expected.

2. They took only 9 of their 36 2P FGAs from midrange, and that is a really big improvement. Yeah 12-27 from the lane isn't good - that may have been their downfall, as you surmised.

3. The real issue defensively against bigs is they need Garcia to not get into foul trouble.

Looks like Ben has found the 7 guys he's going to ride into the ground for the rest of the season, like clockwork.

Yep. It's crazy because it has to become tough to manage the locker room with so many non- contributors, most of which likely believe they should be playing. Playing a short bench when you are winning is more manageable because it is hard to argue with success. When you are losing- attitudes can fall apart in a hurry.

BTW- I see the +/- stats for the game there.

For the season:
Asuma +34
Garcia +18
Odukale +18
Fox +10
Rigsby -4
Edmonds -4
Mike Mitchell -13
Frank Mitchell -22
Patterson -34

Mike Mitchell obviously got hurt by losing a number of games that we won. Rigsby and Edmonds are saved by low minutes.

Basically this tells us that Patterson and F Mitchell have not been what we needed them to be for us to be successful this season. Completely agree about being on the bench while your team is losing, it is very difficult to remain content in that situation. Edmonds is the only one on the team who comes close to matching up physically with Queen and he played 0 minutes last night.
