***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT CAL BATTLE OF THE “GOLDENS” GOLD-OUT IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

The OC and PJ whiffed twice where it likely cost us points one with the trick play from hell and one with trying to run the ball on third and seven. You can’t put lipstick on that pig.
I mean, I can pick two dead ears of corn in a field of thriving ones and tell you the crop is shit, too.

I won't disagree about the defensive playcalling but we've gained over 300 offensive yards, thrown the ball almost 30 times, and converted 50% of our third downs. That's not amazing but I'd consider it good, esp against a power five defense with a freshman qb facing his first P5 opponent on the road. Harbaugh is easy to bag on with the timing of certain play calls but we have three downs to get a first down. Guys need to execute on first and second down. We had the offensive scheme to win and showed some moxie on a number of drives in the second and third quarters, the turtling on defense just put too much pressure on the offense throughout the game. Perich's muff altered the game entirely.

We tend to focus on the worst parts of the game because we're angry and this is our team. It sucks, but I'm not ready to give up on the season after this one. It's pretty clear Drake has been given a lot of latitude to run the offense and he's only a freshman, there's a ton to look forward to.
Oh FFS

This was a disaster from the start. Outcoached for 60 minutes.

The Vikings break my heart plenty over the years with their losses, but I dont find myself wondering "what the heck was KOC thinking there?" nearly as often i do with Fleck

Fleck is a good program builder and above average recruiter. He's not a good game day coach. He needs strong coordinators. I don't think he has them right now.

There's a reason one guy is coaching in the NFL and the other is coaching a mid tier B10 program😜

Hey man, I get it. I'm not shitting on anyone for feeling the majority of this is on Fleck et al, I just think it's typically a little more complicated than that. Over the past nine years we have more examples of this team turning a corner as the season progresses than we do of it regressing, and that's a credit to the team and the staff. This was the first real test after a couple of creampuffs with a lot of intangible factors that were unfavorable to us in terms of travel, time, etc. How they respond to this loss is the biggest thing.

That’s kind of how it’s supposed to work when comparing nfl and college coaches.

I wanna see Kenric Lanier, Malachi Coleman, Bradley Martino and Nuke Hayes.

One of them has to be better than Jalen Smith (which hurts me to say as a Mankato West football alum).

Too early to give up on the kid, but our QB certainly wasn’t gonna throw him the ball again today.

How about when the Gophers were driving in the 4th quarter and 2 running plays in a row are called on second and third down and neither could make it when we have one of the best young passers in the country, then a penalty that pushed a field goal try to 51 yards?

I’m not giving up on him, i just feel like the guys I mentioned haven’t sniffed any action. a huge deal was made about Coleman coming here and he’s a big body that we desperately need, I’ve also heard them talk big about Lanier and Nuke but crickets come gameday. I understand Martino if they want to redshirt him but at some point just play your talent.

Fleck likes to stick to his older “been around the block here” kind of guys at skill positions. Probably why we lost Bucky to the portal when Mo came back for his 14th year.

Long story short, I hope better talent isn’t just standing there on the sideline contemplating a transfer.

Keep playing Smith. Yep, he's had the drops, but he has big play potential. We have little to no big play potential.
