Back at The Barn and it doesn't get any easier as Izzo and the Spartans arrive. What we do know is MSU will be physical, well coached and will not take us lightly. We also know after the game Izzo will compliment Medved, say he's a great coach (which I agree with) just like Izzo did with Monson, Pitino, Johnson, etc.

We have to be one of the leaders in the Big Ten if not the nation on close loses. Well close loses suck.

Let's beat our 3rd ranked team tonight. We are due.

GET 'ER DONE MEDVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Tyson back tonight? Are we healthier? We could use Turner's 5 fouls, I think.

MSU reminds me of Ray Gaffney—his senior night (he was the only senior, IIRC)—was a week day night game against MSU. It was a must-win for the NCAA tourney & the Gophers prevailed. Thank you, Ray, for enduring through the Madison incident; two coaching changes: a 23 game Big Ten losing streak on the way to a wonderfully surprising Sweet 16 appearance in 1989.

Gaffney was a fun guard to watch, definitely an underappreciated former Gopher for what he stuck through (as you state) and his impact on the court. He could ball.

Go Gophers!!

Don't think Niko will let Izzo pat him on the head like the Monopoly Man on the school tax Chance card, ala Ben Johnson.

Response @book

Too busy covering the US Bank stadium team and who farted last night on the roster.

Yep. Torvik has a stat called F.U.N. (fortune unexplained by numbers) and the Gophs rank #346.

MSU's real not-so-secret ingredient is rebounding. They are #6 at offensive rebounding, which atones for their pedestrian shooting numbers. They are also #1 at defensive rebounding.

They also have this statistical quirk that they've had for multiple years - they allow opponents to shoot a very high number of 3FGAs, but the defensive 3FG% is very good. Part of what explains that is rim protection - they're #14 in blocks, meaning teams are forced to be perimeter-oriented - but usually, allowing a lot of 3s isn't generally associated with good defense. MSU's defense is #2 overall. It'd be interesting to know their secret.

You look at some of our recent close losses, and...
  • A 35-foot field goal
  • Foul shots awarded to a free throw merchant on what should have been a travel or turnover
  • Two overtime games, which are essentially ties
That's why their KenPom hasn't suffered much during this losing streak. They've been in most games, including against the top-5 Illini.
