didn't see the game - thankfully that is the last on B1G+ as far as I know.

but following along on the live stats, the Gophers were up 38-34 early in the second half, and then they went on a 34-10 run to go up 72-44. that is the first time this season they've really run away from a non-conf opponent.

Yes, they were not playing a top-tier team, but just the fact that they were able to go on a run like that is - at least - a little encouraging. and everyone who played contributed something.

***I am NOT predicting that the Gophers are going to turn into a juggernaut. But - if/when they get Mike Mitchell and Cochran back, at the least we will get to see what this team looks like when everyone is healthy and available. It may not be a lot better, but at least it might be different.

I think we will be better once we they get healthier. We haven't had any bad losses, just disappointing losses. We've beat who we're supposed to beat. All without our starting PG and our best outside threat.

The 11-0 run happened with Asuma and Betts on the floor. Asuma really helps improve ball movement and spacing when he runs point.

Frank Mitchell is not BIG material. Nor is Patterson. I would like to know Ben's rational for not playing Edmonds more. When Mike comes back I hope Ben limits Patterson's minutes in favor of Asuma. Adukale will get his minutes as he is athletic and does some things well.

MM, Garcia, Adukale/Rigsby, Edmonds/Fox and Asuma would be my choice. But Garcia and Asuma are clearly our best basketball players then Mike.
 



A W over a 2-6(o-5 away) Bethune-Cookman doesn't get me all that excited after 3 non conference losses.

I agree, in certain situations Edmonds is just going to be more productive than Fox or Mitchell. He's bigger and is athletic, defensively he will be a much better rim protector.

I'd be OK with Fox starting too. Mitchell is a massive disappointment and should be the 3rd big man.
 

I was mildly encouraged by the game today (speaking as one of 2,500 or so warm bodies at the Barn).

Yea BC sucks but at least we put them to the sword. Scoring 79 points and winning comfortably...neither of those have happened this season besides the Oral Roberts game.

Was nice to see the ball go in the basket, was encouraged by better ball movement and the level of attempts/makes from 3. We also didn't have even one flaming bag last second shot clock possession!

Long way to go but...baby steps. Don't like our odds on Wednesday but always fun to see MSU come into the Barn. Hope we get healthy soon and keep progressing.

Patterson is a tough kid but he should not start on a Big Ten team- not even this one. He's a nice role player.

Who should start in his place? He's better than Rigsby IMO. Perhaps once Cochran is back you would go big again and he doesn't start.

I'd go like this:
Asuma, Mitchell, Odukale, Garcia, Edmunds

Until Cochran returns (how good is he and how does he fit?) that is our best lineup to match up with Big Ten teams, IMO.

Great question. Where Rigsby gets a nod is in the fact that Rigsby doesn't stop ball movement while Patterson will dribble the ball down into the wood so there's no raised floor left. He can kill ball movement with his dribble.
So, I would give Rigsby the nod, but, Asuma has to run point.

I’m curious to see how Caleb Williams may fit in the scheme of things now that he is healthy. I’m don’t think he came here to ride the pine.
 

With Big Ten play about to start, I can't say that I am as optimistic as I'd like to be. Untimely injuries happen, teams develop chemistry, and momentum can shift. Coming into the season as compared to the current development, some thoughts.

Torvik initially ranked MN at #71 and a rating of .7830 (granted, this was without Cochran on roster)
Currently, MN is #96/.6885 and has deservedly moved into the cellar of Big Ten ratings.
I am hoping the team defense continues, as it was good tested against Wich.St. and Wake. MN doesn't have the excuse of lacking experienced bodies to rotate in.

Garcia has been a tremendous player, but as teams double/triple him nobody has proven to be able to break and score consistently. If he wants to play at the next level, Garcia needs to continue being productive through double teams. Find the open man, hit the cutter, or draw a foul.
Fox has exceeded his expectations in minutes and production so far. A solid rim protector and defender, he's an energetic role player who cannot stretch the floor.

Fairly high expectations thrust upon new roster addn's have been a mixed bag.

Asuma--better than expected, his body is BigTen ready, but makes 2-3 freshman mistakes every game. Need to tighten that and minimizing turnovers.
Rigsby--can clearly catch and shoot in streaky manner, doesn't even pretend to defend, rather escorts his man to the rim. Minutes depend of how he gets down and dirty defensively, plays lower/wider.
Patterson--solid, can score when not forcing shots, which reminds me sometimes of MN Marcus Carr. Lu'Cye is better off ball at the 2. Will need him to be durable and defend.
FMitchell--Tank needs to find his role rebounding, finishing garbage at the rim. One dribble allowed as he has a blind side and turns it over. Commits Payne-like fouls 25 feet from rim.
Odukale--Great defender as advertised, but shooting has been hard to watch. Thought he would be more bold attacking the rim. Doesn't, always pulls up.
Edmonds--As witnessed at UTSA, bulkier and has skills and occupies space inside 8 feet. Has met expectations as a rotational guy.
MMitchell--Started year well, and hopefully will return 100% after "high ankle sprain". MN needs him very badly or things could go off rails in conf.
Betts--Underwhelming with minutes and results. Soft with the ball, hasn't shown much yet, as I was hoping he'd be a breakout player on both ends. Still could.
CWilliams--Limited minutes, but MN will need his instant offense before the BTN schedule gets too far along. Defensive liability am guessing due to size.
 


That bounce pass to Betts from Asuma was a thing of beauty. Betts really runs the floor hard. That's what a true point guard looks like; finding guys like that in the half court and on fast breaks
