Yes. Seriously. In my opinion it wasn't a field-storming moment.

As upnorthkid said in post #7... "Feels like its less and less about the significance of the win and just desiring to be on the field and say you did it."
I think that sums it all up. Penn State was kind of a no brainer because they were top 5 and we controlled our own destiny.

Ugh. What could have been.

Yup, I was actually a little embarrassed watching the field fill up with fans after the USC game.

Silly. They were the 11th ranked team in the nation and a helmet school. Gophers don't get many of those wins. Zero reason to not celebrate it. Especially considering that going into the game....it was looking like it was going to be a really rough season.

Additionally.....this is the "stop skateboarding on my sidewalk" type of mentality that we need to get away from. Things like uniform combos that can attract recruits and fans are important. Creating a fun environment is something that you need to survive. Want students to attend the games? Well storming the field after a big win is just good advertising.

Beating the #11 team at the time, a big name like USC, after a rough start to our season? Storm-worthy IMO. But for the folks that don't like it, they don't have to participate.
It's a sport. It's for entertainment. Enjoy it. Relax.

Storming the field and throwing trash on the field are both getting pretty old this year. Of the two though the throwing trash thing has got to stop, it accomplishes absolutely nothing other than delaying the game and potentially injuring someone down on the field who doesn't deserve it. Amazes me how entitled some fans feel....I would never even think of launching a beer can or bottle of water onto the field no matter how disgusted I was by a call or something that happened during the game.
I'm all for a good field storming. Let the people have fun.

Disagree that storming the field is something that should be celebrated or encouraged.

It is happening so often that it is becoming an accepted thing and that is unfortunate because the potential for bad outcomes with field/court storming is really high.

Field storming should be a very rare event. You can create a great environment that doesn't include the fans rushing the field after the game. The field is for the teams, the stands are for the fans.

Don't get me wrong, when they happen they are cool to see and as long as people behave they are fine. I was at the Wisconsin game when the fans rushed the field after that one and I took part in the field rush after the Iowa game in 2010. It can be a special moment.

Doesn't change the fact that the potential for bad outcomes when thousands of fans rush the field after a game is really really high.

They should still be a rare occurrence but they are becoming an expected part of any big win at this point.

Fair points. Not that you needed me to say that. I think the difference was the point of the season and also our record. Beating PSU at that point "proved" that we belonged and our record wasn't a fluke at that point anyway.

USC left most outside of Gold Country thinking USC really isn't very good.

In a nutshell. It comes down to perspective. I am just happy to see enthusiastic Gopher fans!

Ski-U-Mah!!!

Nah, it's not a crabby old man thing. I think the PSU game and the Wisc. game were perfect times to storm the field and the fact that we still talk about those games tells us that. Hell, I stormed the field after we beat the Badgers!
But now it is done so often by schools across the country for any victory over a ranked team that it has become less special. Its now an Instagram moment.
Also, wouldn't it be a dangerous proposition to actually promote field-storming for the students whenever they want? We've all seen the news and viral videos...you know the ones I'm talking about.

Given the number of articles about field storming and SEC talking about stripping teams next home games against the opponent, clearly people think it’s an issue for a lot of reasons. Get where they’re coming from feom the safety side (it’s a damn long way down to the turf from the railing at the bank and if you’ve had a beverage or two, zero surprise if an ankle or knee become a casualty, not to mention risk of trampling and player safety).

Not only that....people love to sue these days and an out of control field storming is the perfect environment for someone to get hurt or something stupid to happen that leads to a lawsuit.

While it seems like field storming is becoming more common, and maybe it is, remember that students are only in college for a few years and many of them only attend a few games during that time. While we can say "it seems like it happens all the time these days and it isn't special anymore," most students experience few potential stormings while they are in school. For them, it is still generally a rare confluence of events that results in a storm. Schools spend a lot of time and money trying to engender good feelings toward the alma mater. A good old field storm every year or two is a great (and free if you can avoid a fine from your conference) way to generate those types of positive feelings.

The fact that the Gopher stadium staff has songs queued up and ready to go with the storming tells you that the U is all for field storming.

Just saw this. I posted a link to the "Badger stampede" from years ago.

I've never stormed, but my HS kid stormed both the Penn State and USC games. He has memories of a lifetime and pics with Fleck and players. I just sit in the stand and watch with a big smile for my alma mater. He was 12 for the Penn State game.

It's for the kids.

Stormed the field in 2019 with my son. He was almost same age as your kid. Like you said, memories of a lifetime. Sat back and enjoyed watching the USC and Wisky stormings.

The last time the fans went down on the field was November 27th, 2021. Nearly three years. So I don't see that as "happening so often". I'm for anything that gets the fans excited and engaged. An occasional field storming after a big home win is a good thing.

I haven't gone on the field for any of the USC, Wisconsin, or Penn State games either. Don't really care much to do it. Rather watch from stands. Cool to see. As you said....it's really for the students most of all.

Okay. I guess I am just confused about part of your earlier comment:
"...Creating a fun environment is something that you need to survive. Want students to attend the games? Well storming the field after a big win is just good advertising."

I stand by that. It doesn't happen very often.....so when the team gets a big win at home.....why discourage it? Let the students have some fun and celebrate a big win. It's good for the program in my opinion.
