Safety Tyler Nubin is a critical part to Minnesota’s back field as he has played in 32 games and started 13 over the last three seasons. During his junior season in 2021, Nubin third third on the team with 52 tackles.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound safety had three interceptions and three pass breakups with a 72.7 coverage grade, No. 14 in the Big Ten. Of the 26 catchable passes thrown in Nubin’s direction, the receivers he was defending caught eight or 30.8 percent of the passes.

The 2021 Big Ten Honorable Mention Media selection allowed 128 total yards, 35 yards after the catch and one touchdown in 2021. Nubin, a 2022 Lindy’s Preseason Third-Team All-Big Ten selection, didn’t allow more than one catch in each game last season.

From the one of the youngest backs in the Big Ten, to the oldest.

Mohamed Ibrahim has been banging off bodies and breaking into the open field since 2018. He’s back for more of the same in 2022 following a season-ending Achilles’ injury in the first week of the 2021 season.

In his career, Ibrahim has rushed for over 3,000 yards, 33 touchdowns, and has fumbled just twice on 548 carries. 2020 was his last “full” season, in which he led the Big Ten in rushing yards (1,079), touchdowns (15), rushes of 10+ yards (30) and 15+ yards (17).

He won the Big Ten rushing title that year by over 200 yards and had five more rushing touchdowns than second-place finisher Stevie Scott III of Indiana.

Ibrahim is Lindy’s No. 18 national running back for 2022 and is a preseason All-Big Ten second-team selection in both Lindy’s and Athlon Sports. Questions about explosiveness may remain early in the season, but Ibrahim will undoubtably give defensive coordinators fits all season.

BSF #4, behind Laporta, Durham, Vokolek - Iowa, PU, Neb:

Brevyn Spann-Ford started three out of his squad’s 13 games in 2021. But in 2022, he will likely be in the mix with the best tight ends in the conference.

Ford caught 23 passes in 2021 for 296 yards and one touchdown. That score came against Nebraska. He’s the biggest tight end in this ranking standing at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds.

PFF gave Spann-Ford a offensive grade of 78.1 and a receiving grade of 78.5. Those were good for fourth and fifth in the company of Big Ten tight ends. One area for improvement is pass blocking where he scored a 62.5.

Spann-Ford will also have experience on his side. He has played college football since 2018 and has the benefit of sixth-year quarterback Tanner Morgan. Lindy’s named Spann-Ford a preseason All-Big Ten third-team selection.

JMS #1 center:

Minnesota’s John Michael Schmitz is the top returning center in the Big Ten and one of the best in Power Five football. After his first full season as a starter, Schmitz was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection by the league’s coaches.

In 2021, Schmitz was second to Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum, now a Baltimore Raven, in Pro Football Focus’s overall offense and run blocking grade. Schmitz scored an 87.3 offense grade and an 86.2 run blocking grade compared to Linderbaum’s 95.5 and 96.3 in the categories.

The 6-foot-4, 320-pounder led the Big Ten in pass blocking with an 80.8. He allowed five quarterback pressures without a single sack or quarterback hit in 2021. In the Power Five, Schmitz ranked third in offense, fifth in run blocking and eighth in pass blocking.

Schmitz is a preseason second-team All-American selection by Lindy’s and is also on the first-team All-Big Ten by Lindy’s and Athlon. Lindy’s crowned the sixth-year senior as the Nation’s No. 2 center.
 

Lastly, Golden Gopher Mariano Sori-Marin is entering his fifth season with Minnesota and now with one full season of starting experience, the inside linebacker is ready to do even more damage in the league.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Illinois native has played in 33 games and started seven over his four season with Minnesota. in 2021, he racked up 85 tackles with five tackles for loss, three pass break ups, two forces fumbles and one interceptions.

Sori-Marin, a 2021 All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection, had a coverage grade of 71.6, eighth in the Big Ten. Lindy’s is expecting Sori-Marin to go out with a bang in his last season as they selected him on their All-Big Ten Third Team.

I just don't believe that MSM only has seven starts. A quick look at the roster suggests that that is not including the 2021 season, where he started all 13 games.
 


Ciarrocca's past offenses with the Gophers haven't featured the TE that much, but when you have WRs like Bateman and Johnson, that's really understandable. Curious to see if Spann-Ford's presence changes that. We have a nice set of WRs, but they aren't at the Bateman/Johnson level (at least at this juncture) and Spann-Ford's size can make him a match-up nightmare. I'm not one of those guys who insists we need to throw more to the TE, but when you have one with this much potential, I hope that avenue isn't ignored.
 

If Mo is better next season than TreVeyon Henderson, we're sitting pretty.
