Tommie Talk & the Torvik (T-Rank) Rankings
St. Thomas (4-3, 2-5 ATS) drops 12 spots to #148 after a surprising loss to Cal State Fullerton in Game 2 of the Portland Invitational. All four teams in the round-robin invitational are 1-1 through the first two days. UST still can win the championship if Northern Colorado beats Cal State Fullerton in today's opener and the Tommies follow with a win over host Portland.
Saturday Reach the Summit Recaps
Cal State Fullerton 88, St. Thomas 80
Down 72-66 with 3:57 to play, the Titans (2-4) closed the game with a 22-8 run. #330 North Dakota vs. #350 Western Illinois, 6 (ESPN+)
Saturday Eye-Openers
San Francisco 77, Minnesota 65
Not sure how much of an "eye-opener" it really is, but the #59 Dons (5-1) led most of the way vs. the #85 Gophers (4-2) at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. Guard Ryan Beasley led the Dons with 24 points, 4 assists, and 4-for-6 marksmanship from three-point territory. Langston Reynolds came off the bench to lead the Gophers with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Cade Tyson added 14. The Gophers (11 for 22) shot a paltry 50% from the free-throw line.
The win was the third by a West Coast Conference (WCC) team over a Power 5 opponent. The WCC (3-3) is the only non-Power 5 conference with a .500 or better record vs. the Power 5.

As St. Thomas learned the last two nights in Portland, basketball giveth, and basketball taketh away. It's starting to feel like the season will be a bit of a rollercoaster for the Tommies, but that doesn't make them unique. Nothing comes easy, but who said it would be. (cliche alert) Game at a time, improve as you go, peak in March.
