Nov. 19 B1G Power Points Rankings: Gophers sitting at #6

Basically, it's your win total (only 1/2 point if opponent is non-DI) + the number of wins the opponents you beat have = total power points. Accumulate points by winning games, get nothing for a loss.

Because the have Happ and 3 really good guards and play with precision on both ends of the floor. I see the Gophers as slightly but they will have to prove it. There is not much difference between teams ranked from 10-40 and plenty of teams from that group will be winning games against the top 10. Every year it will be in the neighborhood of 65-70 games.

Sconny definitely stays within their system and executes efficiently. Athletically they can't compete, which is why they won't make it to another Final Four in our lifetime.
Happ is a decent athlete with exceptional footwork, but overall they don't have elite athlete's. Gophers are much better athletically, but the Gophers turn the ball over and it lets Sconny have a chance.

1)Take good shots...

Always try to get an easy layup or paint touch which can lead to double team then kick out for wide open look for 3. In general, avoid any long 2pt shots.

2)Play tough defense without fouling...

Avoid reaching in and stay on the floor (use your body and arms straight up to defend, only go for blocks as help defender). Identify shooters and stick with them.

3)Ultra low turnovers...

No risky passes, no out of control drives, set solid picks. This is drilled into the players from day one as a dumb turnover will get you the bench as quick as a lazy defensive play.

It may not yield as many highlight reel plays, but it works and has for years. Another big key is having kids that buy into the program and grow for 4-5 years. Always having experienced leaders who know each other's preferred spots can help the offense run smoothly.

SS, you should give teams 2 points for top 25 wins. At the very least 1.5.

This should be our half-court offense, coupled with fast-break opportunities off defensive rebounds. Too often this Sconnie philosophy is criticized as boring. It wins games.

The 2013 and 2014 teams were also teams that probably "couldn't athletically compete" but ended up going to back to back final fours. Virginia is also a team that plays systematic basketball, and outside of the UMBC loss, lost 2 games last year. I'd much rather take a discipline, skilled team over an "athletic" team that has no fundamentals.

After seeing early returns from B1G teams, it looks like there's a great shot that the conference will break its record for NCAA tournament teams (8 teams ore more, I believe).

There's no clear powerhouse at the top, but there will be plenty of teams that could make a run similar to Michigan last year.
