Notre Dame Schadenfreude thread

I don’t think anyone has said Notre Dame owes the Pop Tart Bowl anything. Most comments seem to be anti Notre Dame because of their “take the ball home” mentality.

I think they got screwed because Alabama should have dropped out of the top ten instead of ND. But Bama and the SEC complained before the seeding and the CFP committee caved.

The real story. I suppose the argument for keeping Alabama was mostly about not punishing teams for conference championship games (sorry Bring ‘em fans!) but explaining away Alabama’s slide into comparative horribleness by the end of the season while dismissing Notre Dames stronger finish and more competitive early games after losing a bunch of talent from their great 2024 team (ok, arguable schedule) is pretty curious.

The classic symptoms of EES (Extreme Entitlement Syndrome):

— Refusing to join a conference, play a conference schedule and share revenue — things that almost every other school does.

— Demanding a guarantee that would apply only to you and not to any other team.

— Refusing an invitation to play in a good bowl against a solid opponent because you were not chosen to play in the tournament.

Seek medical attention immediately, or risk derision and contempt.

USC and Notre Dame have cancelled their agreement to play each other for the 2026 - 2029 seasons. Even though they each left a spot open for the 2026 seasons, they couldn’t agree between playing early season (USC preference) or late season (Notre Dame preference).

However, USC ended negotiations to cancel after Notre Dame signed the agreement with the CFP committee that stipulates if they are ranked 12th or higher, they get into the playoffs.

get where usc is coming from given they don't have control of the B10 schedule and ND can schedule "weaker" opponents or byes around the game with USC to prep for it given their flexibility with scheduling in ways USC cannot. Will be curious to see if more and more teams stop scheduling them
2026: neutral: WI, Navy; home: rice, MSU, Miami, BC, SMU, Stanford; road: Purdue, UNC, Cuse, BYU
2027: home: Purdue, Auburn, GT, BT, Navy, BYU; away: MSU, WF, Clemson
Then have Texas, Bama, FSU, Indiana as some other big names in upcoming years but all B10 and SEC teams are playing them early. Tough ask late in the year.

I envision some of my relatives flipping over in their graves at the news of USC-ND being paused.

I'm not really thrilled with it either. Saw it in person once.

So dumb. You want a guarantee you'll be in the CFP, Notre Dame? Join a conference and be it's champion. If not, suffer the consequences.

The consequence this year was the viewing public was subject to a god awful game between Miami & Texas A&M.

One fewer G5 entrant into the tournament also would have likely produced a better game and more viewership.

Maybe ND in that game would've made the game better, maybe not, but not my point.

If they were in a conference and guaranteed their position by being the champion, I'd have no problem with them taking the slot of Tulane or James Madison. But they're not, and they didn't.

I get it was not your point.

My point is the CFP would generally be better with Notre Dame in it, and I root for them to lose every game they play unless they are going against a Big 10 team.

Maybe it’s because I live in Chicago and alums from those particular schools are everywhere, but without question the top two on the list of people who make a point of telling you where they went to college without being asked are ND and Michigan.
I also have connections to ND and have been a life long fan . My nieces who both married guys from Chicago have the same complaint about ND alumni. There is a fine line between being proud of your school and being an annoying braggard.

It's a very intense arrogance.
