The Gophers have received a commitment from Notre Dame transfer defensive tackle, Micah Dew-Treadway. He took an official visit to campus this weekend and made things official via Twitter on Tuesday morning.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive tackle is a graduate transfer and will have immediate eligibility. Dew-Treadway has appeared in 20 games over the past two seasons and was redshirted in 2015. He sustained a foot injury in 2016 and reportedly struggled to regain conditioning in the next season. Dew-Treadway posted just two tackles this season and has primarily served as depth during his time at Notre Dame.
Out of high school, Dew Treadway had offers from Wisconsin, Purdue, Maryland, Virginia and Kentucky, among others. He was the No. 29 defensive end and received interest from P.J. Fleck and his staff at Western Michigan. He grew up in Bolingbrook, Ill. and went to the same high school as former Minnesota players, Jacob and Julian Huff.
Since entering college, he has added almost 30 pounds to his frame, but still boasts the quickness/explosiveness that stood out on his high school film. He has experience at multiple aliments within the interior and edge, but likely projects as a three-technique at the next level. He needed to add more mass to fight through blocks at the next level and it appears this has occurred. Dew-Treadway has the blend of length and size to align as a prototype three-technique. He also has the size to kick into the one technique, too. This type of versatility will be valuable for the Gophers' depth chart, especially considering O.J. Smith recently declared for the NFL Draft.
Where he will likely provide the most value is as a pass rusher and physical presence inside. This is an area the Gophers wanted to improve, specifically within the interior. Building things inside helps the entire defensive line perform at a high level. Last year, the Gophers lacked depth and rotational ability at defensive tackle. Now, they have spent a major portion of the recruiting cycle adding defensive line talent. Jamaal Teague and Dew-Treadway can possibly team up inside and complement each other well. The Gophers will likely rotate Sam Renner and Rashad Cheney into the mix as well. With defensive tackle depth being in an issue in past seasons, Minnesota's staff is valuing the importance of winning the line of scrimmage.
The Gophers were treating this portion of recruiting like free agency in the NFL. The window from January to February is an opportunity to add players who can instantly impact your roster within areas of need. Dew-Treadway will see plenty of playing time as the Gophers try to improve the physicality and pass rushing skills at the defensive tackle position.
