Tina Thompson out at Virginia after four seasons

Virginia has fired women's basketball coach Tina Thompson after the Cavaliers wrapped up a 5-22 season Wednesday with a first-round loss in the ACC tournament.

"Unfortunately, we have not experienced the kind of success this program has come to expect and deserve," Virginia athletic director Carla Williams said in a statement announcing Thompson's dismissal. "I am thankful for Coach Thompson's efforts and I wish her the very best."

Thompson, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer as a player, was 30-63 in four seasons as Virginia coach, including a 15-37 record in ACC play. She had one year remaining on her contract.

Virginia's season ended with a 61-53 loss to Wake Forest in the ACC tournament.

Arizona State's Charli Turner Thorne expected to resign.

TEMPE – Arizona State women’s basketball coach Charli Turner Thorne is expected to announce at a press conference today that she will step down from her role after 25 seasons with the program.

When asked about the news, ASU athletic director Ray Anderson said, “You will find out more at 3 (p.m.). That should give you a hint.”

ASU’s was eliminated from the Pac-12 Tournament Wednesday following a 59-54 first-round loss to Oregon State.

Turner Thorne is the winningest coach in ASU women’s basketball history and holds the second most career wins in the Pac-12. Turner Thorne notably took a leave of absence during the 2011-12 season, citing the desire to regain life balance.

The program has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2019, when the Sun Devils advanced to the Sweet 16. ASU advanced to five Sweet 16s and two Elite Eights during Turner Thorne’s tenure.

An official announcement from the university is expected to come out later Thursday afternoon. The Sun Devils finished with 12 wins this season and it is uncertain whether the team will participate in any postseason event.

Its weird to me how Illinois has struggled so much in wbb, it really should be a decent job but 3 coaches in a row have been terrible. Will be interesting to see where they go now, its gonna be a tough rebuild for whoever gets it.

"Weird" is right. They're in a recruiting hotbed. It does not seem like it should be hard to get decent players there (well, with a D3 coach, I can see why it was hard...)
On one hand, might McKenzie be looking to come home? On the other, she's exactly the position the Gophers do not need.

I think the Gophers could use another PG, or is she more 2 guard?

West Virginia's Mike Carey retires.

Women's basketball coach Mike Carey, who's been in charge for 21 seasons and 447 victories and produced 11 NCAA Tournament bids and 10 WNBA players, has stepped down. Multiple sources told EerSports that Carey, 63, has chosen to retire. He has one season left on a contract he signed in April 2016.

The Mountaineers were 15-15 overall and 7-11 in the Big 12 in the 2021-22 season, which was sharply affected by injuries. The team accepted a WNIT bid on Sunday as an automatic qualifier. The teams that finished higher in the conference's standings qualified for the NCAA Tournament, which made WVU the guaranteed selection for the WNIT. On Monday, though, athletic director Shane Lyons explained the team would not participate.

“While we appreciate the invitation for our women’s basketball team to participate in the 2022 WNIT, we have made the difficult decision to decline the invite this year,” Lyons said. “Team injuries, along with student-athletes set to enter the transfer portal, have limited our roster availability, and we would not be able to provide a competitive or positive experience for our student-athletes.”

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Sue Semrau, the longest-tenured head coach in the ACC and Florida State’s all-time winningest coach, announced Monday that she is retiring as head women’s basketball coach at Florida State University. Interesting:

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - According to a source within the Texas A&M Athletic Department, the next head coach for the Aggie women’s basketball program will be a current head coach in the Southeastern Conference.

All indications point toward Gary Blair’s replacement being Georgia’s Joni Taylor, who has surfaced as the front runner in the last couple of days.

Taylor is no stranger to replacing Hall of Fame coaches. She was an assistant and associate head coach at Georgia under Andy Landers for 7 seasons when she replaced him in 2015, becoming just the second head coach in program history.

Joni has produced 7 consecutive winning seasons as the Bulldogs head coach and in 2021 was named the SEC Coach of the year

I remember she took a leave a year ago. Hopefully one of her assistants apply for the coaching job.

I always thought she was a classy coach, glad she is finding success
It's good to see her back in a power conference. When she led the Hoosiers, I thought her animation made it entertaining to watch her lose. Indiana dropped a key match-up at Williams arena when her foot stomping (and presumably some verbalization) drew a late game technical.

Beth Cunningham, who Marlene Stollings replaced at VCU, will become Missouri State's head coach.

Missouri State announced Wednesday night that Beth Cunningham will become the next head coach of the Lady Bears.

Cunningham will join the Lady Bears' staff after 20 years of college basketball experience. She spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Duke under Kara Lawson.

Cunningham will take over for Amaka Agugua-Hamilton who departed the Lady Bears program for Virginia last week. Agugua-Hamilton guided the Lady Bears for three seasons and made the NCAA Tournament in both of her opportunities.

The Bloomington, Indiana, native will be introduced on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Plaster Student Union Ballroom located on the third floor of the Plaster Student Union.

Before her career at Duke, Cunningham spent eight seasons as an associate head coach at Notre Dame under Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw. She was a part of one of the best stretches in Notre Dame history as they compiled a 244-19 record in that span with seven straight 30-win seasons, six conference titles, five NCAA Final Four appearances and the 2018 National Championship.

Will that end the nice run SD has had in the Summit? She certainly deserved a shot at a higher level program.

She played her college ball at Div 2 Michigan Tech. Starting coaching there under Kevin Borseth. Pretty much won everywhere she’s been.

They have better resources and better support than everyone else in the summit, theyll likely keep it rolling. Just not quite at the level of the last few. This is their 3rd coach in a row thats been really successful.

Ya i meant to say they have better resources and support from everyone other than SDSU, those programs will continue to dominate the summit for a long time.

Austin Parkinson name Butler head coach.

Butler has hired Austin Parkinson, the all-time winningest coach in IUPUI history and fresh off an appearance in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, to lead the women's basketball program.

Vice President/Director of Athletics Barry Collier made the announcement Friday, April 8.

**The Butler community is invited to welcome Parkinson on Tuesday, April 12 at 1:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Wildman Room at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Media members are also invited.**

In his 12 seasons leading the Jaguars program, Parkinson posted a record of 224-141. Parkinson's Jaguars earned the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance by winning the 2022 Horizon League Tournament. IUPUI had a record of 24-5, including a win over nationally-ranked Iowa. It was Parkinson's eighth 20-win campaign. IUPUI also won the 2020 Horizon League Tournament and earned a berth in the 2020 NCAA Tournament, which was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic
