Northwestern looking at a USC grad transfer QB; former four-star

Is it just me, or does 90% of USC transfers end up at Northwestern?
 

Last highly rated transfer QB was a bust for them. maybe second time will be the charm with this USC castoff.

More amazing is that for a number of years USC has raked in the croots ... and generally done jack squat with them.

Their recruiting has plummeted this year ... if they don't get their athletic department and administration in order and pick up a new HC soon, dark times.
 

He was their 4th strong at best last year as Daniels, Slovis and Fink were all ahead of him.

Just another example of how the recruiting rankings are not the end all be all indicator of how teams are going to do. Just getting highly ranked players isn't enough. You need to find the right mix of players and coaches regardless of where they are ranked.

Nebraska is an example of this as well. On paper they are bringing in a ton of talent but to this point it hasn't been showing up on the field.

There are some rumblings that they might consider going independent in football, or even join the Big 12.

I'm not sure how either would help exactly, but maybe sometimes you just need a change of scenery.

Considering the Pac's bungling of TV revenue ... I wouldn't blame them.

Larry Scott is a disaster.
 

PAC teams don’t get TV ratings.

West coast population doesn’t have the college football fans/viewership that central/eastern timezone does. And those latter folks aren’t going to stay up late to watch PAC games.

Fundamental conundrum with PAC football on TV, that clearly Scott hasn’t been able to crack.


It’s not like PAC schools aren’t spending enough to win a national championship. And it’s not like western players aren’t talented enough to win a national championship.

They’ve just hit a drought lately.

The Pac 12 simply hasn't made a good TV deal like the B1G and ACC.

At one point this was sold as a strategy to avoid having to split revenue with fox or ESPN and go to other providers on the internet ... but they just haven't made that happen.

The Pac's go it on their own TV deals have been so bad that in some local markets where Pac 12 teams play ... they've gone long periods of time not on TV at all.

Well, we know that for some USC sports all you need to do is send in a picture of your kid holding some athletic equipment and they're on the team!

The bold part is pretty significant. A game that starts at 7:00 pm on the West Coast starts at 10:00 pm on the East Coast, and will end at about 1:30 am. Even die-hard fans would have a hard time staying up that late to watch Colorado vs. Utah (I realize those states are both in the Mountain Time Zone, but both schools are in the Pac-12).

One proposal that was floated in 2019 was to have some Pac-12 games start at 9:00 am local time. Besides that time of day being problematic for players and fans, they’d still get crushed on TV by the B1G games starting at the same time.

We got hung up with those awful 11AM games for years in the Big Ten. I was always in favor for forcing the SEC ACC to start some games at 11AM in the interest of getting a steady flow of games throughout the day, why not start a few an hour earlier? Of course that never happened, but somehow we in the Big Ten had to tolerate those ESPN 11 AM games for 30 years!

I personally live watching west coast games late into the night. Every time I travel to the West Coast I hate the sports TV situation with no games at all to watch after 9 or 10 PM.

I love PAC 12 after dark.
 

Yes, living on the west coast would take some getting used to for viewing sports

They have a great coach, and they -- finally -- invested in top notch practice facilities.

They don’t have a great coach. They have a very good coach.
I know it’s Northwestern but Northwestern has two big ten titles in the preceding 15 years before him and he has managed to be under .500 in the big ten.

If he is a great coach, so are half the coaches in the country.

Both preceding HC had far worse over all and B1G records over the same number of years (combined).

Both preceding head coaches also won a title.
Are they both great coaches? Because they’ve had at worst similar levels of success to Fitzgerald.
 

I’ll admit I’m biased towards a big ten title though.
In any case, no coach under .500 in his own conference is a “great” coach. He’s very good.

I don't think the back up qb from Indiana is going to be a cure all for a historically bad offense. I guess I wouldn't say they are an easy win, but I think they are about as close there is to an easy win in the B1G, outside of Rutgers.
