If any of this information is incorrect please let me know. However, I have been wondering about something for some time. As a caveat, I'll admit I have only watched one Texas game this year so I am no expert on the Longhorns. However, I dug up Texas's depth chart and it appears that as a Sophomore, Nolan Brewster is third on the depth chart at safety. The two starting slots appear to be occupied by Blake Gideon and Earl Thomas. Both are also sophomores. I believe he played behind both of them last year as well.

Here's my question. At what point does Brewster realize he probably isn't going to get a chance to start for the Longhorns (or, most likely, even play significantly). After this season he still has two seasons of eligibility. Do you think he will give any thought to transferring to play for the Gophers and sitting a year out? Our secondary looks to be our biggest area of need on defense. If Brewster transferred this year, he could sit out a year and then play the remaining two years of his collegiate career on a team whose best recruits will be coming into their own at the same point he joins the starting lineup. He would get to play his remaining two years with a veteran MarQueis Gray at QB.

Does anyone know Nolan Brewster personally? There has got to be a way to talk him into transferring now that it's clear he will likely never start for the Longhorns.

If he is playing more currently than I am aware of, please correct me. As I said I haven't studied the Longhorns in depth this year.

Form what I understood during his recruitment year, he grew up around the longhorn program when Coach Brew was there, it was his dream to be a longhorn, his relationship with Mack Brown is almost familial, and he's been a solid contributor on special teams so far.
The thing that got me, and I'm not sure where I heard this, but I think it was from an interview with Coach Brew, Nolan specifically asked his dad, "Tell me to play in Minnesota and I will."
No father worth spit would make his son give up his dreams of playing for a favorite team, so Coach Brewster left it to him. I think he's a solid longhorn, not that we wouldn't take him.

It's an interesting idea, for sure.

Playing for Texas was a dream of his. If being sure of getting significant playing time was all that important to him, he probably wouldn't have gone to Texas. There are lots of players who spent time on the bench when they could have been starting elsewhere. He's only a sophomore, he could well wind up playing more in the next couple of years.

Maybe if Texas wins it all this year, he will say, "I got my ring, now it's time to go help out dad!" :D

After they have graduated from college and are working for a living and raising a family, who is going to have had the most enjoyable college experience and most satisfying college football career - Nolan Brewster or Kyle Theret?

Unanswerable

That's entirely premature. How would one know? Maybe Brewster is happy as a clam contributing on special teams playing for a national champion contender? Playing for paps is a tough thing to do. Just ask Cody Hawkins.

Gideon and Thomas are both very good, and I wouldn't be surpised of one of them (most likely Thomas) goes pro after next year leaving some room for Nolan to play as a senior. I've watched Texas a few times, and Brewster has been in during key situations. He has 11 tackles and 1 int on the season, so it isn't like he is riding the pine. I'd say there is no way he transfers.

I agree maybe he doesn't transfer, but maybe he comes here to coach after he's done playing. Little father son action. Like reverse Kiffin situation.

Did he not red-shirt last year? I didn't think he played at all last year, and was a red-shirt freshman this year.

Clint Brewster concurs.

He might be third but I believe he's the nickle guy. So he sees the field plenty.

Probably Brewster.

What kind of point are you trying to make?

Cody Hawkins SUCKS!!! (I live in Colorado)

As for UpnorthGo4's question, I would probably rather contribute on special teams and as the nickel back for Texas than start for Minnesota. And I love Minnesota, but Texas football is incredible and he's playing for national championships there. Hopefully things will change here and we'll be at that level in a couple years. But right now I'd take Nolan's shoes.

Nolan

Nolan went to Texas instead of MN because he has a much better shot getting into the starting lineup there. He probably would just play on special teams at MN.

Texas vs. Minnesota

I have a son completing his MBA at UT. He has spent some time with Nolan and the answer is Nolan would not trade his time in Austin, Texas for a starting safety position at Minnesota. Make no mistake about that.

Why would he come knowing his dad might get canned after his sophomore or junior season? Being the only family member left behind would be tough. Hawkins' run at BSU makes his situation more stable.

Why?

Why would Nolan come to MN, if he would only be good enough to play on special teams?

If Nolan Was From Redwood Falls...

He would have been 1 or 2 star rated at best. Another case of reputation over substance. Having daddy a former college star and now a DI coach is why is was rated so highly.

This is your second post in this thread to that point and it is absurd. If you think that a true soph nickel back and backup safety at Texas who is used in crucial 3rd down situations and is a solid contributor wouldn't have at least the same impact at the U then I don't know what is wrong with you. I have a feeling the Texas defense is a little bit better than the Gophers defense. Last I checked the defense was one of the worst in the B10.

Theret has started 19 of 25 games for the Gophers and has 177 tackles and 6 interceptions. Brewster has not started once in 20 games for Texas. He has 21 tackles and 1 interception. So far, I like Theret's career. But I guess that is just me. Neither one of them is going to play pro football.

I went to the Oklahoma State/Texas game in Stillwater this weekend. Nolan Brewster started the game and played the whole way......and he played a great game. He can really lay the wood on run support and he has very good vision and reactions in coverage. UT played five DBs in this game most of the way and Nolan was a major contributor. He would immediately be the best DB on our team if he transferred.

this is quite possibly the funniest post I've ever read in my 7+ years here on gopherhole.

I think a lot of people would rather be in Nolan Brewster's situation. He is a sophomore getting significant minutes on a Nat'l Championship contender. I can't stand the state of Texas, but you'd have to be out of your mind to not see how a 18-21 yr old kid wouldn't love living in Austin and playing for the 'Horns.
