Maybe TCU will be ranked in week 3. They have to jump 9 spots it looks like.

Sid must have checked the wrong box.

- TCU went 4-8 (2-7) last year and lost their star CB and DE from last year but got 23 votes.
- Northwestern went 5-7 (1-7) with a 7 game Big Ten losing streak last year and lost both Venric Mark and Kain Colter but still got 8 votes.
- Nevada went 4-8 (3-5) last year with wins over San Jose St (6-6), Air Force (2-10), Hawaii (1-11), and Sacramento St (FCS) but still got 1 vote.

What in the world are these voters thinking? In the wise words of Lt. Daniels:

A big reason why having a selection committee to select the playoffs is a good thing. Having writers who really don't have a clue help decide who was in the NC in the past was ridiculous.

Not sure why anybody is surprised. When you've done diddly squat on the national scene for almost 50 years, you're not going to get the benefit of the doubt from national media members.

It all comes down to winning football games. Do that, and the national media might begin to take Minnesota a little more seriously.

Northwestern getting 8 votes really seems bizarre.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Honestly, same thing with Penn State too. Btw, just what is the media's obsession with NW this time of year? I get the whole Fitzgerald mystique (real or imagined) thing that so many of them glob onto, but beyond that I find it rather baffling.

What have NC, Vanderbilt, Duke, Louisiana-Laf. And Utah State done in the last 50 years?

Exactly! Those voters should base their pre-season opinions on what happened in the 50's! Recent success should not be taken into account!

Teams who will not be in the final 4.

Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma, TOSU, Auburn, South Carolina, Baylor, Stanford,

I'm not surprised that Minnesota isn't listed as much as I'm surprised that some of these schools received as many votes as they did.

OK i can't buy all the crap about our program being down so many years. We win 8 games last year and beat some decent teams to get there. Teams that we beat got votes and Nevada got a vote?

this really just screams polls are bogus until games are played but getting respect is one thing but when people get to vote without watching football at all is stupid.

Welcome to GopherHole, where all commentors are above average.

Not sure how you can even have a preseason poll in the first place. I would think it would take a couple games to see what teams are producing to get things started.

Don't think it's the reasons given

We are picked low in player position rankings in the Big Ten. We are picked to finish low in the Big Ten in most places.
Anybody who looks at our schedule has to think it will be tough to win six games. We will not be favored very often.
So, why would be rated in the Top 25 by many of these same people?

We need to pull off several upsets to have a winning record. I'm confident that will happen IF we stay healthy
(Especially at quarterback). Put another way...we have the opportunity to play 7 of the teams who did receive votes.
Compete and compete and win some of those and we will be in the Top 25 providing we beat the 5 teams on our schedule who didn't
receive votes.

Be careful what you ask for! TCU lost 4 games last year by a total of 11 points. They easily could have been 8-4 instead of 4-8. We should and most likely will be the underdog in this game.

Nothing as far as I can tell, but I wasn't speaking to our lack of votes in the poll as compared to schools like UNC, Duke or any of the others. Voting in these polls is often subjective and nobody thought the Gophers deserved to be included. The past 50 years of history has proven them right the vast majority of the time. This is a national poll, which means voters represent the entire country. Local members of each section of the nation vote differently. Some give their squad the benefit of the doubt, some don't. The Minnesota media doesn't tend to give Minnesota the benefit of the doubt. You can therefore bet that if the Twin Cities media, who has watched this program remain largely irrevelant for almost 5 decades doesn't give them a vote, nobody else will either. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

Like I said, win games and this all is moot. Preseason polls are virtually meaningless anyway as they reflect perception rather than reality. We'll all find out who deserves to be in the top 25 soon enough.

Worth noting that Duke and Vandy both finished last year ranked. I'm guessing nearly every voter starts there when doing this first poll. UNC and ULL, while not having great seasons, won their bowl games. There's something about winning your bowl game that makes people think you'll be great the next year.

If they would have won four games, which they in fact lost, then they would have doubled their win total and matched ours? I think we should be favored in this one. If we go the other way, one of their wins was by only 4 points, and if you take that one away they could have easily been 3-9 instead of 4-8.

+1. No way we should lose this game.

So you're saying if we win lots of games including a few against good/ranked teams and all against non ranked teams that we will be ranked? Thanks.

The one thing about pre-season polls - if you are ranked at the start of the season, and keep winning, you stay in the rankings. If you are not ranked, you pretty much have to roll off a nice winning streak, then wait/hope for teams to lose and fall out of the rankings.

So, given my druthers, I would rather see the Gophs ranked at the start of the season, as opposed to having to fight their way into the rankings.

I am afraid there are several people out there who have a written different takes on this game than you have. Below is what The Daily Gopher had to say about the game. They also have two weeks to get ready for us. The good news is that I am sure Kill will take this game a lot more seriously than you are.

Final Analysis:

This is a game that I can see going either way, It will be a tough task for the Gophers for sure. They will have a good crowd of fans in town for the game which will help, but TCU's defense is just damn good. Like almost Michigan State good. If the Gophers can run the ball effectively, they will have a good chance to win this game. If they can't however, I don't think the rest of the Gopher offense will be enough against the strong defense of TCU. I can easily see this being a low scoring affair with both defenses having good games. I was much more confident in a Gopher win before reading a little more into the Horned Frogs, and now am definitely conflicted. I'll have to make a decision eventually, but for right now I'll predict a 17-13 final...with someone winning. Just not sure who yet.
