The new Strib sucks overall, and even worse on coverage of Gopher hoops. Agree or disagree with the beat reporter in the past, they have provided a lot of coverage. Marcus had a lot in recent years. Yet, today, as we are about to play our first P5 opponent with a new coach that had the team looking better than expected first few times out, and no mention anywhere in the Strib of the upcoming game. Come on editors, turn Marcus loose from covering stupid high school sports so much and get back to covering Gophers.

There was a time through the Musselman/Dutcher/Haskins generation when Gopher basketball was often the second biggest sports story—behind only the Vikings. Now it has a niche following/fan base. It is sad.

Agreed, and I think there are a lot of people who would come back pretty strong with something to cheer for. Williams Arena crowds have always gotten behind teams that simply play hard and with a purpose. It's been a lot of years since we had teams play hard all the time, and play hard and well consistently on defense. That's what has been so cool the first couple of games - multiple guys diving on the floor, moving their feet, rotating and helping out and covering up for one another. It's really been since Clem that we saw teams do that every game at Williams Arena - play hard and with a purpose.

How many people especially younger read the paper anymore? Especially if they don't care. Football has writers covering the Gophers who are fans of other B1G ten teams.

Plenty of online content gophersports has a preview.

There is multiple threads on this site.

Other online major media content regarding this game

I no longer pay for the recruiting sites but I'm sure Ryan James has a preview write up.

Pretty pathetic to not even mention it.

What typical person would actually go to see what Ryan

What average fan ever went to a recruiting site, or any of these you linked to? And, none of those are local. Each of these actually require a person who is interested to search for content. Many people still go to the Strib online for content, as well as, surprisingly, get the print edition. They actually have a pretty high readership (top 10 in country), and their news influences what is on tv, online, etc. It still reaches a lot of people.

Probably shouldn't have let the program bottom out the way they did. Now it's a challenge to earn fans and coverage back.
Yep, that's the fine line every AD has to consider when making a change. And, I think, ours waited too long twice. However, I do think people will come back pretty quick with a product that is fun to watch. The coverage helps with that though, so would be nice to get some more of that locally.

I assume the Strib doesn't even have a Gopher basketball beat writer anymore?

Are they under 70? I don't know any person that goes to the strib or basically any newspaper for online content that are not of retirement age. A lot of people belong to 247 or Rivals. I'd rather pay for recruiting sites or Athletic than the Strib/Pioneer Press.

The U's own website is a local angle. Here is another. I'm not sure I agree with final score though :)

To each their own.

Fun isn't enough anymore. Have to provide wins, and vs well known teams. Probably for an extended period of time. The depths this program has gone to are REALLY low. Couldn't get lower short of off court issues.

There's more ads than any sports coverage in the printed sports section, everything online now. Print will have a game preview in five days lol

According to Google, it's the most visited website in Minnesota. I doubt that's all people over 70.

With the game being broadcast on something called SECN+ and dozens of Gopher fans attempting to access the App, the Strib probably figured, why bother?

The sad thing is, it's by far the best college basketball game being played tonight.
No other matchups tonight with 2 P5 schools.

ESPN and ESPNU are aligned with MACtion football though clogging the TV schedule.

Not at least televising it on SEC Network is inexcusable.

I appreciate your argument. I don't think it contradicts what @Tucker32 was stating. I think Your sentiment is complimentary to what he was alluding.

I am not of retirement age. I stopped reading the Strib because their redesign was done so poorly. They wanted to bring in more "voices' and cater to different interests. The journalistic quality got really bad.

I of course will still read the articles for free if they have anything decent. Funny, didn't start that until they catered to the "young."

I used to read it in paper form or a free online article. But not paying for an online subscription to the strib. The writing is very poor/biased as they are not from here. Preferred Sid and even the typos. I enjoy the pro teams but only content I want to see is Gopher related. If it's a recruiting site (paid), Gopher website, Daily Gopher or even national sources I will look there instead. High School sports would go the individual MN Hub but now has been taken over by varsity/strib. The content/articles may be good and did consider it but just did not want to pay what they were asking.
If I want to read local news online will go WCCO or KSTP websites.

Yup agreed.

I think Andy Mannix reports flat out untrue quotes, and clearly unvetted information.

I went from an avid everyday reader to someone that only reads them free through internet archive due to the just atrocious reporting. that's only if, it is the only place with the story.

I think you are confusing playing hard with talent. They play hard but just haven't had the talent.
