Just post the job and name him coach already.

My god, we had to have thought this was a possibility and had some sort of plan in place to, I dunno, appoint the guy who is an extension of Kill and has been with him for 2 decades, and who did a pretty good job last time he served as Gophers head coach to the job. Let's see here:

-he'd keep the staff that has been together longer than just about any other staff intact.
-he's the best positioned to hang onto our current recruits and continue to recruit
-can't think of a bigger slap to the face of Kill if we don't hire him and let he staff disband
-if we don't go with Claeys its a sign that we aren't happy with direction of program which is crazy considering last year
-we are very far down the pecking order of available positiond this year
-if we do hire from outside the program, I imagine we'd have to wait to hire an AD, dragging this out even longer
-I imagine Claeys would take the gig for a lot less than any other close to proven commodity - most of whom wouldn't even consider the gig without an ad in place

If there was ever a no-brainer for the U this would be it. Claeys to coach and Sawvel to DC. Done. Shoulda been announced the same day and moved on.

Just saw Jeff Horton getting off a plane at MSP

You are comparing Horton to Claeys?
A guy who had been with a head coach we fired mid-season for a very short time to a guy who has been with a head coach we wish was still our head coach for two decades?

I though my original post made fairy clear there are multiple reasons to give Claeys the job rather than the old, "just hire the best assistant on the staff" line. Obviously I failed to consider you.

I tend to agree, it's time for Kaler and company to move quick and decisively, hire Goetz and Claeys full time and pronto. Dragging it out could really set the program back.

They have to advertise the position and do a search by law, you can't realisticly do that now, you have to wait until the end of the season. Even if they have already concluded that TC will be the next Head Coach they have to go through the motions. I'll be shocked if the process isn't completed by the end of the year, but it would be an even bigger shock, if it's done before the end of the season.

When you are going to hire a guy who has never run a program, you really want to do it as soon as possible.

And what happens if the Gophers lose the next 3 games by a combined score of 123-7?

No, you just failed to convince him. Obviously, the concerns of those in a position to make a decision aren't identical to your set of concerns.

Yes they have to advertise the position, but they do not have to use a search firm and can easily do a "search" of coaches not presently under contract. Beth Goetz can simply rely on her internal staff before coming to a decision with school president Kaler. Is all the disruption and loss of an excellent recruiting class really worth it?

To get the best person for the job, you betcha.

I'd also challenge the assumption that it's an "excellent" recruiting class. It's a good one but it's still only ranked 8th in the conference by ESPN and 7th by Rivals. But I guess one who would rate Kill's tenure as an "A" would also rate the 35th or 40th best recruiting class as "excellent."

Agree. Everyone wants Claeys to stay because of the recruiting class. But we have no idea how the next 5 games will go.

What if the Gophers are not competitive against the next three ranked opponents? What if the Gophers don't win another game the rest of the year, and go 1-7 in the B1G? That would be the worst B1G record since Kill and staff arrived. Worse than year 1. So how would the program at this point be any farther along than year 1?

That's a lot of 'if's' but it could happen. I hope at the very least the Gophers are competitive and find their way to 6 wins. At that point I think Claeys should be kept on full time and given an extension. But we have to see how the next 5 games go.

This is logical but I would like to see them expedite both the AD hire to Goetz and hire Claeys as quickly as possible.
For Goetz those involved need to make sure she has the values, integrity, and the potential to do the job.

It's not about logic. It's the law.

If they don't expedite it ahead of the AD search, we'll probably be hiring a coach in about April. I'm sure that will go well.

That's why I said post the job and get it moving.
If it's me, I make an announcement the job is posted and I've encouraged Tracy to apply.
Where is the law that says you can't post the job already?

As for being the master sorter of which threads to have and what to combine and what deserves it's own thread..... I'll leave that up to you. Doesn't bother me in the slightest although seems to upset you a bit. I'll.second you if you want to nominate the creation of an All Things Sports thread.

Oh, let's play this game. It seems fun.

If we scored one TD in our next three games I'd probably recruit a Juco QB and look to split the OC and OL coaching responsibilities.

Now it's my turn:
-what happens if don't hire a coach until March?
-what happens if he turns out to be Brewster?

Let's complicate it a bit more:
-what would have happened if Kill remained and we lost our next three by a combined score of 123-7?

Too bad nobody at the U had the foresight to play this game and ask the question:
-what if coach Kill needs to step down in the middle of the season for health reasons.

Maybe they did play and the best they came up with was to sit around and do nothing.

Or let the last 5 games play out, which will answer my questions, and see if Claeys can handle being the head coach. Which is exactly what I said if you could read.

You obviously can't read though, which is why you started this thread, after the same topic has been discussed in several other threads.

I'd look at it a different way. A majority of the class is from Minnesota. Those guys will likely stick no matter who the coach is and no matter the timing.

I heart thread police.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but didn't Claeys act as the head coach for multiple games at the U once before? How many times does he need to do that to before your questions are answered? Will someone else come in with no unanswered questions?

And as both Kill and Claeys said in their press conferences, Kill was still around the majority of the time when Claeys was the acting head coach. The only time Kill wasn't working behind the scenes with Claeys was when he completely missed the Michigan game. This will be the first time Claeys is completely on his own without Kill.

There is NO WAY that this guy is fit to be the HC at the D-1 level, not after tonight's debacle. That pre-game talk he gave the guys was borderline threatening, uninspiring, and poorly delivered. The ending made for a "perfect" bookend of ineptitude. FAIL! Move on to greener pastures, U of M admin. Get a younger, hungrier, sharper bunch in here. While this current staff has many virtues, they are simply not championship caliber. Don't settle for mediocrity anymore, please.

Al Golden is a shoo in for this position.

Agreed. In my opinion, as time goes on, and Kill's imprint and influence on this team dissipates, you will see a gradual drop off in inspiration. The magic of Kill will slowly wear off. You can't underestimate how much impact Kill had on inspiring these kids to leave it all on the field. As new recruits join the program, the quality of play will slowly erode; the kids won't feel the same way about the program. Kill was extremely demanding and expected every one to work as hard as he did. Under Claeys, we will see the intensity slowly wane and the passion decrease. Kill was one of a kind and Claeys will have a hard time maintaining what Kill created here. Just one guy's opinion.

Yep, we sure did play pretty flat all game with no emotion.

Good Comedy. Thanks guys.
