NIT Game #2: #1 Gophers vs. #4 Saint Mary's [ESPN2, 2:00PM]

I will be watching. Screw the NCAA.

GO GOPHERS!!!

My DISH guide shows nothing but women's NCAA tourney tomorrow afternoon on ESPN. Are we sure the Gophs are on TV?

My ESPN2 is now showing cheerleading tomorrow afternoon. I'm just going to assume DISH is messed up.

I'll be at the game. I'm taking my daughter to the Bell Museum and then we'll walk over to the game. I'd go to the women's game as well, but it would go past her bed time.

I live 15 minutes from the St. Mary's campus. I have tried to take an interest in the local college basketball teams here as there are so many in the Bay Area. St. Mary's is not the same team from last year bit they still have some potential to be dangerous. They have a good post player with decent size and a great mouth guard with fangs on it. They have a few guys who can shoot the 3, but not much depth. They turn the ball over a ton, so if the Gophers turn on the pressure it could be a blowout.
This should be an easy win as I don't think the Gaels have an advantage in any area vs. the Gophers.

I guess the only way St. Mary's wins is if they hold the ball for 30 seconds every possession and are very efficient on offense, and we play one of those half-disinterested games with 20 turnovers.

Oh and in the biggest game of the year for them their alleged great 3-point shooters put up air ball after air ball vs. BYU at home on the last few minutes in a must -win game for the Gaels. The dude with the French name is a local kid but he's a turnover machine.

I watch St. Mary's play quite a bit since I'm a Gonzaga alum and fan, but also a huge Gophers fan and their main players are definitely their big guy Brad Waldow and guard Stephen Holt. Waldow is a big physical player who has a nice touch around the basket, but he is not overly athletic. Holt is a really solid player all-around and is a good shooter, but I think our guards can definitely give him trouble. Beyond that it is basically James Walker III, Beau Levesque and Kerry Carter who provide any scoring, they can all hit the 3 ball but they have struggled for the most part when playing the top WCC teams like BYU and Gonzaga.

Like damueller99 mentioned this is definitely not the St. Mary's team from last year, it is a rebuilding year for them after losing their star Matthew Dellavadova whose now playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Next year they should be better with Waldow returning, a Stanford graduate transfer available in PG Aaron Bright, a could solid freshman and I expect Joe Coleman to play well for them. The Gophers should win, but SMC could give them trouble if they don't bring their A game.

Thanks for the scouting report damueller and WCG. I knew nothing about St. Mary's before reading this, other than that's where Coleman ended up. I think the Gophers come out and play really well today as long as Mathieu is healthy. The sting of not making the NCAA's should be gone and all focus will be on an NIT championship.

Illinois about to lose a heartbreaker, gave up a layup with 9 seconds left. Now down one.

I forgot about Coleman. Didn't realize he ended up there. Is he playing or did he have to sit out a transfer year?

Usually I use this as a Gonzaga fan, but it applies for today's game as well: #GaelFael

Looks like a pretty decent crowd actually. Terrible start so far.

Boys need to wake up. Lots of lazy passes.

Wow, this sounds like it is an awful game thus far. Trying to get a stream going but just watching the box score now. Ugh.

No one on our team looks like they want to score. I'd put Buggs in for King and hope for a spark.
