The National Invitation Tournament Board of Managers has announced new qualification procedures for the 2025 NIT, which include bids going to 16 “exempt” teams, as well as others that may qualify automatically as regular-season conference champions.

I like that they announced the use of a composite average ranking for selection using multiple indexes instead of a single index.

I'm uncertain what this passage means because of the bolded word:

In addition to the exempt teams, regular-season conference champions that are not otherwise selected to the NCAA championship can earn an automatic bid to the NIT as long as that regular-season champion has an average of 125 or better across the BPI, KPI, NET, KenPom, SOR, Torvik and WAB rankings.

Reading "can" literally seems to indicate that teams achieving that average rank of 125 or better will be considered for an automatic bid but are not assured of one. Personally, I don't think any team with an average ranking below 100 should be considered for an automatic bid.

Also, why THIS language:

Exempt teams will include the top two teams not selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship from both the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference.

Why the special automatic bid selection factor for four teams from these two conferences only?

The Big Ten and Big East plan on going forward with their own 16-team postseason tournament. ... 2 automatic bids apiece. So presumably the College Basketball Crown (CBC) will get the best available Big Ten & Big East teams not selected to the NCAA Tournament.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I'm assuming we'll still have lots of teams passing on the NIT & CBC, not to mention there'll probably be some participating teams whose coach just got fired.

Thanks! I didn't know about the CBC tournament. I just looked at their website and the Big 12 apparently is involved too.

Thanks, good catch on the Big XII.

As NateDawg said, it’s basically the Disney/ABC/ESPN-based tournament (SEC & ACC) and a FOX-based tournament (Big Ten, Big XII, Big East)

Is the NIT staying 32 teams and 16 for Fox? 48 non-NCAA teams is way too many.

My guess is conferences tiedto the new tournaments won’t allow their teams to say no. They will be contractually obligated. Interesting to how a team that finishes 6-14 in league play will be motivated to play. Teams like that may not have enough players after portal announcements.

That's entirely possible since, according to the website, this tournament takes place from March 31st until April 6th. The NCAA tournament championship game takes place on April 7th. Of course, people hitting the portal do have a few weeks after that to enter.

Is there a Minnesota exemption?
It would be the polite thing to do.

It will be nearly impossible for a 6-14 Big Ten team to be invited to this FOX produced event. It will be the top two Big Ten teams that didn't make the NCAA Tournament. Most likely that will involve a pair of teams that are near or just under .500 in Big Ten play. Last year, it was Iowa and Ohio State, each of who were 10-10 and 9-11. They got the auto bids to the NIT. Minnesota got an at-large berth to the NIT last year.

My guess is the Big Ten, Big 12, and Big East will get about 4ish teams apiece into this event. And, remember the Big Ten and Big 12 now have 18 and 16 members respectively, so there will be some good teams involved in this tourney from those leagues.

I believe the Mountain West (a good basketball league) will have an unofficial presence in this FOX tourney, as well. They have a TV deal with FOX and most likely there's a handshake deal that a team or two from that league will be invited. If nothing else, it could help tickets sales if it is the right MWC school.

The CBC can also invite other at-large schools from other conferences.

That's an interesting write up.

I think he is dreaming if he thinks the FOX thing will be a disaster any more than the NIT has been a disaster. I am guessing the best "secondary" tourney will be this FOX field and NOT the NIT.

This FOX field will include the top teams from arguably the top three conferences. Last year, it is likely these teams would have made up some or all of the CBC field:

Indiana
Ohio State
Iowa
Minnesota
Rutgers
Oklahoma
Kansas State
Cincinnati
South Florida
Villanova
Providence
Seton Hall
Butler
Utah
Washington
UNLV

That field would decimate anything the NIT could put out there.

Fair point.

I think the biggest issue with the FOX tournament is the 2-week layoff. Not sure how thrilled players & coaches will be about that.

Yeah, not sure why they want to wait two weeks. Seems odd. Although, it appears they want a one-week event, so is it better to sync it to around Final Four time, or be done a week after the conference tourneys end? Not sure what to think.

As to what players and coaches think?

Players?? My guess is they would love a potential one-week trip to Vegas. Certainly better than a trip to Terre Haute, Indiana, for example

Coaches? Not sure.

Also, as you and Holy Man pointed out, wondering if teams will be allowed to decline an invite. If so, that could significantly weaken the field.
