Niko’s roster construction

You're right, I didn't mean it as a personal attack.

Just wish he had an editor and more broadly, wish we had much better local coverage of the program.

Ryan Burns on the football side just offers a far superior product.
Ryan Burns gig is full time Ryan James is a side gig he has a full time job that pays the bills, not a fair comparison.

I'd like to see another 40% 3 point shooter come our way.

just saw the Texas Tech rev share percentages. assumes rev share will get approved, though there's a current snag with roster limits

TxTech is planning 17.4% to mens basketball, or about $3.5M. guessing the U might be in that range

basketball heavy football light schools like UConn might be closer to $5M for mens basketball

maybe Niko hanging on to a couple million for either Garcia (if fifth year granted) or to attract a starting 5?

6th year and, according to what was posted here, his appeal was denied. I don't think there will be another "5" recruited unless it's some project player who is way down in the rotation. Possibly another forward though.

I think this is correct. Would like 1 wing/forward who can get consistent rotation minutes, back up vet Guard who wouldn't be a total mess if injuries or fouls added up.

Simply looking at height this team looks for formidable. Last year we had 3 guys over 6'6" that we played.

Garcia
Fox
F. Mitchell

Going into this season we have more options and good size. We've got about 6 rotational guy that are 6'7" or taller.
Definitely looks like we will be playing big wings, which will increase the overall size. I'm not as sold as others that Turner is an immediate B1G rotation player, but that is clearly the current plan.

Height and skill is the Wisconsin model. The question is always whether those players can move their feet on defense, contest shots, and rebound.

They will be bigger, longer, and more athletic under Niko. A nice change of pace from short and stubby.

Not many freshmen centers score 37 points in a game. He also had 10 straight games of scoring in double figures once he started playing more at the end of the season. He was 76 of 111 (68.5%) on free throws. Obviously, there are some promising things about him and he certainly has Big Ten size. I expect him to struggle a bit at the beginning but come into his own as the season progresses.

I'm not in here trying to be a wet blanket; I definitely see the potential. I just think people are underestimating the jump in competition from the ASUN to the B1G. I found nine players that transferred out of the ASUN in the previous two years. This is per Rivals -- if I've missed anyone I could update this -- and every player that "went up" a level or more in competition saw a decrease in performance.

I think Turner is a great use of a scholarship. But I'm concerned about how many minutes we plan to play him next season.

Good analysis! Still, most of those players were upperclassmen. This guy was just a freshman and improved a lot in that one year. From what I can see, he had very little in the way of D1 offers coming from high school but he was one of Central Arkansas' best players, albeit on a poor team, by the end of the year. I know this is a big jump and I expect him to struggle for some time but I think he has enough potential to be good if given the chances.

It wasn't long ago that we had a center, Liam Robbins, who had a similar background in some ways. He had no offers coming from high school in Davenport, IA but went to prep school and got an offer from Drake. He averaged only 11 minutes and 4 points per game as a freshman but took off after that.

You can’t teach height!!

I thought the portal closed on the 22nd?

April 22nd or 30 days after the player played his last game, whichever comes later. Johnson doesn't fall into the second category so I'm not sure what he's doing. He's also out of eligibility like many of these later entries.

I just realized this is the first Gophers team I’m excited to watch in years.
